Unfortunately, all new unmodded blu-ray players, consoles etc are locked to only play discs coded for one region and that's not likely to change. 4K discs are all region free but when it comes to DVDs and blu-rays you are stuck having to deal with region locking. Technically there's no such thing as a "region free" blu-ray, those are in fact coded for all regions (ABC) rather than none but, as you are free to play them anywhere, "region free" is a fair way to describe them. Below you will find lists of:
- REGION A LOCKED 3D blu rays only available in Region A countries (Post #2) - REGION FREE 3D blu rays only available in Region A countries (Post #3) - REGION B LOCKED 3D blu rays only available in Region B countries (Post #4) - REGION FREE 3D blu rays only available in Region B countries (Post #5) - 3D blu rays that are autoconversions (Post #6) It seems that nobody really bothers with Region C locked discs even in Region C countries. In practice, China is generally treated as Region A due to its ownership of Hong Kong and everywhere else is treated as Region B, but discs from those countries (India being a notable one) tend to be region free. Many 3D blu rays get worldwide releases but there are an awful lot of 3D blu rays exclusively available in Region B countries and there's some real classics locked to Region A that look like they will never come out in Region B so really, if you're a lover of 3D, you have no option but to get yourself equipment that enables you to watch Region A and B discs. I know some of the titles listed are also available elsewhere, but not with English subtitles or audio - all the titles on these lists are English-friendly unless otherwise specified. There's a separate thread listing 3D blu rays that aren't English-friendly across all regions. Where such a release has been erroneously described as being English-friendly or only has the English audio on a 2D disc I may list it here, but there will always be a note. In this forum, I've put [Region Free] in the thread title of every movie that's completely region free worldwide. If it says [Region Locked] then it's locked in both regions, so naturally [Region A Locked] or [Region B Locked] means you can only get it locked to that specific region. If it says [Region Locked / Free] then that means that some releases are locked but there is or was a region free release somewhere so look it up. I use rewind in addition to searching this site and forum and reading reviews. You can't always rely on Amazon listings as those are often wrong. Please also note that ALL Disney / Marvel / Pixar 3D blu-rays are REGION FREE with only one exception - Ratatouille, which is locked to Region B. Universal, Paramount, Sony and Warner Brothers also generally don't region lock anything, so you can import their major titles with confidence, though there are a few exceptions. 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Kino, Shout Factory, Entertainment In Video and others do tend to lock their releases, so watch out for those, but if you just look the film up here you shouldn't have to ask if it's region free because it will say in the thread title.
