I didn't realize how many copies of this I have. I couldn't find all the DVD's but here's what I could find so far. It all started with the VHS tape then the individual DVD releases then along came the DVD boxset. I didn't think life could get any better but then the blu ray and HD DVD wars began. I think The Matrix trilogy was an HD DVD exclusive so I ended up going with both formats in the beginning. Then when blu ray won out I got the blu ray set so now of course I gotta get the 4K version to keep the pattern going. (The VHS and HD DVD's are still sealed)

It's like they've raised the gamma in the darker shots but lowered it on the brighter shots.
There was one particular shot where the shadows in some bushes were crushed but everything else looked great, and the crush was raised and made green to blend with the bushes.

They very much did the best with the source they had.

I recall Azkaban being dark as hell but I thought it looked very nice. Been a long time since I’ve seen The Matrix but I wouldn’t mind it getting similar treatment, even if there’s a little crush. I’ll take some crush over raised blacks.

I would be fine with just the first film. If they are released individually, I'll pass on the sequels. Hopefully you won't have to buy a box set to get the first film, but they didn't do that with the Nolan Batmans.

Yes, I saw Azkaban personally. But it's the same on caps too in terms of shadow definition. UHD fixed some scenes, that were crushed on the blu. For example the one where Hermione and Harry hide to save the hippogriff. But many other scenes still look like ink spill.

Definitely no buy if it can't replace the full Ultimate Matrix BD set.

TBH I've not found UHD to be much of an upgrade thus far.

I don’t think the movie had a DCP when it initially came out, so it would be awesome if they remaster the print in 4K.

According to Geoff the first film was finished photochemically so I assume they'd go for a 4K scan off the negative there. The others had a 2K DI.

Another good thing about the first Matrix, it had relatively small amount of FX shots for a movie of this kind and length. If it got a new scan, majority of the film should be major improvement.

They'd probably go for a 2K DI on the first if the other two are, for consistency? Especially if they do a trilogy pack right out of the gate. Shame, but 2K can still look nice and HDR could do a ton.

Ideally, we'd get the first in 4K, and if it outclasses the sequels in every way... then oh well.

WB didn't care about consistency in case of HP, so who knows...
