I wanted to limit this to one but that's impossible.

I suppose this one hasn't technically had a formal "announcement" yet, but Arrow revealing their plans to (eventually) release David Lynch's Dune was a pleasant surprise.

Was also a bit surprised to see Buck Rogers get a stateside release. Same for The War of the Worlds (1953).

I think Amazon Women on the Moon and Kino announcing they're putting out Spaceballs in 4K next year were the biggest surprises of 2020 for me, though.

Of course, the least surprising non-announcements continue to be True Lies and The Abyss.

Edit: I stand corrected. The theatrical version of the Buck Rogers pilot getting an HD upgrade as part of its US release was the year's single biggest surprise. Didn't see that one coming at all.

Mulan, for it being a Disney+ title that got the stealthiest of physical releases. Meanwhile, The Personal History of David Copperfield was digital only despite getting a wide theatrical release.

Not that it'll be known this side of the pond (& hardly known in the UK), but a 1959 British WW2 POW mass escape film, Danger Within, it's been a favourite of mine for years, & it's never had any home theatre releases, & just a battered old print on TV every now & again. It's just been released on DVD & Blu-ray by the UK company, Network. Now that was a nice surprise.

Definitely would have to be this:

Paramount's catalog releases were also surprising as well (whether they be part of the Paramount Presents line or not), since they literally came out of nowhere.

LOL! I never saw that graphic before. Reduced to that small size, it looks like she's sharting out some impressively colorful debris.

Yeah, it's great. The artist clearly understood the satirical aspect of the movie. For me the artist who did the cover for Criterion's release completely missed the point.

Easily Curse of Frankenstein. Not only does the restoration look beautiful, but it being a 2 disc release with new bonus featurettes and a commentary made me super happy.

This year has been full of fantastic and unexpected releases, but the one that surprised me the most has to be:

I’ve loved this movie since I was a teenager and at this point I never thought I’d see the day it got a BD. Still can’t believe it’s finally happened.
