Physical media is supposedly dead but there were so many great, surprise announcements this year, many never released on DVD or with no prior blu-ray. Off the top of my head, here are my personal favorite announcements:
  • Africa Screams (1949)
  • Alice In Wonderland (1933)
  • Barefoot In The Park (1967)
  • Blood Games (1990)
  • Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits (1971-1981) with 2K theatrical version of Enter The Dragon
  • Cattle Annie And Little Britches (1981)
  • Crash (1996)
  • Fraternity Vacation (1985)
  • Ghost Breakers, The (1940)
  • Gotcha! (1985)
  • Heavenly Kid, The (1985)
  • Hot Dog...The Movie (1984)
  • Jack Lemmon Sony MODs
  • Just One Of The Guys (1985)
  • King Creole (1958)
  • Kitten With A Whip (1964)
  • Million Dollar Mermaid (1952)
  • Munster, Go Home! (1966) with 2K Munsters' Revenge
  • Mystery Of The Wax Museum (1933)
  • Never Steal Anything Small (1959)
  • Our Gang/Little Rascals from ClassicFlix
  • Outside The Law (1920)
  • Paleface, The (1948)
  • Penelope (1966)
  • Pretty In Pink (1986)
  • Pretty Smart (1987)
  • Rad (1986)
  • Roman Holiday (1953)
  • Romance On The High Seas (1948)
  • Scenes From The Class Struggle In Beverly Hills (1989)
  • Sign Of The Cross, The (1932)
  • Sunday In New York (1963)
  • Tex Avery Screwball Classics
  • Tony Curtis Collection from Kino
  • Urban Cowboy (1980)
  • Wild Life, The (1984)
  • Wizard, The (1989) 4K remaster
  • Wonder Woman TV show
There were a few disappointments:
  • Criteron's Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) - Mentioned by John Kapelos in a November 2017 article but still not officially announced. I really want to see the deleted scenes with Kapelos.
  • Laurel & Hardy: The Definitive Restorations - A DNR mess.
  • Rankin/Bass' Here Comes Peter Cottontail (1971) - Universal just repackaged the old interlaced and cut disc instead of fixing the issues with the original disc.
  • The ClassicFlix Our Gang/Little Rascals Indiegogo campaign failing. Thankfully they said they are still going to release them on blu-ray.
  • To Catch A Thief 4K remaster - Embarrassing 4K restoration by a major studio who inexplicably defended their work after fans complained.
  • Twilight Time officially closing shop.
  • Twins (1988) - We waited over a year after Shout Factory's announcement and we ended up just getting the old scan.

All in all, I think it was a very good year and impressive since Covid was around for most of the year. I can't wait to see what is announced in 2021!

This probably pleasantly surprised me the most. I thought it was long forgotten and would never happen..

On a much less upbeat note, I am at the moment surprised and disappointed that Wong Kar Wai has gone all Lucas on his own films .

The War of the Worlds (1953). Glad it was finally released here in the US as well as across the pond.

The Barbarians. Peter and David Paul don't get a lot of love these days so it was nice to see a good release of one of their films.

Honestly, the best announcements to me are never-on-disc titles I haven't heard of, rescued from being forgotten. Give me more movies like American Rickshaw!

Any other year this question would've been easy to answer but 2020 has mostly been a blur. I didn't see Beastmaster coming so I guess this would be my choice but it's not an HD premiere so it loses some of the specialness. I'd have to go through my collection to give better-informed answers. A lot of people tend to forget the early part of the year when they make these lists.

All of the Paramount catalogue blu-ray releases, both the ones they released themselves and the titles they licensed out to other labels.

I had once resigned myself to never seeing many of these titles on blu-ray and now Catch-22 is the only Paramount DVD I have left to upgrade.

I never thought this movie would be released and it was in my email sig. It's not a great movie, but one I really like.
