It's amusing to me how many people care more about a format than having a film the best it could possibly look and refusing to upgrade just because.
Many have mentioned the 4K digital for $4.99 which would look better than the HD Paramount Presents. It could look better on the LG 88ZXPJA 8K OLED.

Upgrading is all relative.

Fantastic. I guess to have the ultimate version, just buy this, the Criterion one, and the MoC one for all the extras plus the 4K remaster.

While I’ll definitely get this, I would trade all the Paramount Presents line (minus Bugsy Malone and Pretty In Pink, of course) for the rest of their OOP/never released titles. Looking For Mr. Goodbar, Little Darlings, Paper Moon, Ordinary People, The Astrologer...

Admit it, you’d probably go for that too.

I was 14 or 15 when I saw this in the theatre. I remember being bored out of my mind. I think I was too young to understand what was happening.

I will eventually see this again. I bet I'll appreciate more. But, if I'm bored...

I watched this on HBO when I was 13 years old. At that age you just don’t get it. I now consider it the masterpiece that it is. Never boring, so much going on, so many things the picture says about people and American life. Just watched it again last night. It gets better and more appreciated after each viewing. It is as politically and socially relevant today as the day it was made.

I saw NASHVILLE at an advance "sneak" preview. It played with THE DAY OF THE LOCUST, so that was a long double-bill. However, I loved both of them.

I recall hearing that the consensus of the opinion cards that patrons were asked to fill out (about NASHVILLE) was that NASHVILLE was good, but a bit overlong. I have always thought that many of those with that opinion might have been influenced by the length of THE DAY OF THE LOCUST, which was screened right before the sneak of NASHVILLE. LOCUST itself runs nearly two and a half hours.

Given the cast and director, I figure I'll appreciate this go round. I still have to pick it up. Add it to the 300 I haven't watched.

That would have been very cool. I love advance screenings. Unfortunately I never remember them. My wife will mention the Director speaking and I'll say "we saw them?"

I do remember The Anniversary Party. It's when digital filmmaking was just getting started. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming held a screening with a Q&A afterward. It was very good, a little talky. Hasn't made it to blu ray.

I recall seeing a preview of HEALTH with Robert Altman in attendance. Unfortunately, that film was far from his best.

I saw a preview screening of Popeye from a very scratched workprint and a not always in sync and very rough sound mix. I don't remember how far in advance of the opening it was--but found it interesting that it appeared they just seemed to bring the copy the editors were working on.

Any info on how the new blu ray transfer looks? This is a favorite so I ordered it for the new 4K scan so I hope it's a better transfer, even if Criterion's still is very good.

it's automatically bound to be better considering Criterion's came from a 2K IP scan while this one is a much more fresh 4K OCN scan

unless Paramount slathers it in DNR which I've noticed they've at least gotten better about

Any Canadians on the forum who mighty know why we are no longer getting the Paramount Presents titles? Even Bay Street Video in Toronto which had been importing them last year (ie. Fatal Attraction, Flashdance) don't seem to be selling them (they originally had Mommie Dearest as coming soon and then nothing).

We did get The Golden Child and Pretty in Pink but not in the deluxe packaging.

So around the time of Almost Famous, I asked my local indie retailer who gets his discs from the US but is located here in Canada why he hadn't listed AF PP. He looked into it on his end and he said that his distributor and Paramount were preventing "independent" video store accounts from ordering the Presents line of titles. Not only was he unable to get the new titles but any of the past Presents line titles were suddenly unavailable to him as well. He wasn't entirely sure what prompted Paramount's decision and the consumer facing side of that distributor (WowHD, Deep Discount etc) was still able to sell them but he couldn't get them in stock. So I'm not surprised Bay Street Video would be having the same issue since it's very likely they are sourcing from the same US distributor (Alliance Entertainment). Unfortunately there's no formal link or article discussing this. It doesn't make a lot of sense that an independent video store account wouldn't be able to get a line of titles like this especially since these aren't blockbuster titles you'd expect to see in mainstream retail, but it does seem to be what is happening.

As for the deluxe packaging, I suppose it's possible that some of the titles will get separate non Presents branded releases up here but it doesn't seem to be happening yet - atleast not day and date with the US.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful response. That's really interesting - and puzzling, especially since Bay Street Video was my main source for getting the Presents titles last year. Disappointing for independent video stores and for collectors.

I don't really understand Paramounts rationale for not having these available for Canadians. Do they not want my money?

That's some bizarre regional restriction mumbo-jumbo. Always about the bottom line as opposed to the art.

So any reviews or comparisons out there? Curious, as I have the Criterion.
