I have a fairly big room (about 500sq/f) does that matter in the size of the sub I need?
The sub is the one speaker that you absolutely DO NOT need to match to the rest of your system.

If you have $600, there should be two choices.

1) SVS - 20-39 PCi - $599 - http://svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-pcpow2.cfm
2) Hsu Research - VTF2Mk3 - $499 - http://hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-2-mk3.html

Find me one site that specializes in audio that consistently recommends low budget subs from Polk, Paradigm, Klipsch, Velodyne, etc., over SVS and Hsu Research and I'll BUY YOU your new subwoofer.

Sometimes you gotta cut through the hype of people that only want you to buy what they have and get one with getting superior bass.

You should only be considering Paradigm and Velodyne if you're looking into Paradigm's Reference line or Velodyne's Digital Drive line, and in both cases you would be budgeting at least $1,500.

SVS is the only sub to consider? Suprised all the other manufactures haven't gone out of business... Perhaps people who recommend something other than SVS do so because they perfer something other than SVS. I listened to an SVS sub, and in the end I purchased a Paradigm because I liked it better.

I too have a Paradigm, the Servo 15v2.

Also, SVS was not the only sub mentioned to consider, and we're also talking about a $600 maximum budget.

Perhaps you should read posts a little more closely hmm?

As for going out of business based on the quality of your product, see Bose.

SVS is my fav, but its all dependent on your own ears, now get out there and demo

Enough said.

I run 2 subs. An Earthquake sub and a Paradigm. The Earthquake is place up front, the paradigm behind the seating area between the rear surrounds. All line level driven. The Earthquake powered by a pair of channel from one of my Parasound HCA2205s amps. The Paradigm is self powered.

So far been happy with this setup but I am working on a new sub....

Hmm k let me see, $600 wasn't a max by any means but more of a guideline... . I did take the time to look through the site and found the VTF-3 MK3 with Turbocharger...

Any thought's one this one? and how it compares to a Velodyne or other competitors?

how big is your room again? sorry, got a tad lazy today to filter through...

theres no such thing as overkill when it comes to subs, but you may have to check its dimensions vs your needs..

ive seen/heard/felt it a while back, and believe its one of the true competitors with SVS.

Anything you pick up from Hsu will stand up to any competitor's sub at similar price range, because they cut out the middle man.

I think you'd be happy with the VTF-3 Mk3 even without the Turbocharger added on.

+1

SVS and HSU make nice subs but for the price the AV123 MFW-15 seems the way to go.

As alluded to earlier, no thread considering the question, "Which sub should I buy for $XXX?" is complete without a link to Craig's rankings. They're not the be-all end-all but they're at least an attempt to more-or-less objectively compare the real world performance of a whole bunch of subs and as such are far more useful to someone in the market than boatloads of marketing hype and/or folks (myself included) touting the virtues of the sub they themselves purchased. If pure bang-for-the-buck is the issue there's a clear winner on that list for our OP (and it isn't from the company I mentioned off the top of my head earlier in this thread).

The clear winner for OP budget ~$600.00 from Craigsub ranking.

AV123 MFW-15 ($599 ID): 103 points (53-50)

This will be where my money goes when I need to replace my sub.

I used to have a Velodyne 15" and it was amazing. Unfortunately I lost it to a freak power surge.

If you're a do-it-yourselfer I also highly recommend the Dayton kit from partsexpress.com. Those things freaking slam.

Read the reviews and all I can saw is WOW! Defiantly considering this one...my question though is does it have a grill/cover to go over top, cuz well I have kids and when they see that sticking out they will poke the center in...

That’s a good size room, one should be fine but, if find out you want more you could always add another. I believe AV123 currently has a special going on something like two MFW-15 for $999.00.

I'm running an SVS PB13-Ultra in a room that's about 17x30x8 with a 6' doorway on one side the opens into a similarly-sized adjoining area and it's *more* than enough for me despite the fact that I enjoy loud noises. Actually I have the sub's gain just below 50% and the receiver's LFE channel at 0 dB so not only is it more than enough there seems to be quite a bit of headroom left as well. I'd imagine that you could get by with one MFW-15 in a room the size of yours but at $999 for a pair I'd be sorely tempted.

Are both of these good choices for a system that is used 75% for music? I ordered a new sub, but I have 30 days in-home to audition it, and for the price, I like these.
