Blue Beetle 4K UHD (2023)

I thought the family stuff was great in this and also had some great comedy and proper heartwarming moments, but the actual superhero stuff was a drag.

It’s probably a me thing but I really don’t like superhero movies where the ‘power’ is just letting an AI in a suit do stuff for you, and that’s most of this one. I found bits of Tom Holland’s spidey trilogy the worse for it, when it’s basically Iron Man junior. Letting a higher being/power control them or their actions completely dehumanises them as a hero, and the best superhero stories focus on humanising the heroes.

This movie might do the whole origin thing to the book, but I’m honestly okay with that for a more niche property, especially if they nail the growth, satisfying payoff and feeling the character earned their powers, but here you get none of that. He has no powers, then he has an alien robot symbiote (the origin of which is never explained much to this movies’ detriment) that he can voice command, then he sort of takes control a little whilst having not done anything that would explain his ability to fight or fly, and then he’s kind of fully in control. The alien/AI/symbiote doesn’t have a personality, then sort of does a little bit at the end. The whole superhero part just felt so clunky.

Not a bad movie, but I wish the superhero stuff lived up to the family drama. I need to check out The Flash to see how it stacks up.

I enjoyed The Flash too. I'm a decades-long comic book fan and appreciate serious comic book movies. But I was surprised by how much enjoyed Blue Beetle for being what it was, a light-hearted family film. As others have also said, I thought it handled it's humor and quirkiness better than the Shazam films. If you have MAX, test drive it on there first. But I'm getting BB to own on 4K as I did The Flash.

It wasn't perfect, but I settled on the Walmart's Icon Edition as the retailer exclusive to buy recently for DC movies. I don't take care of SteelBooks all that well. LOL So if there's none for BB, I guess I'm gonna settle for the standard release instead.

It's the other way around, they're putting the extras on the 4K so they don't have to include the BD anymore. Save a bit of money that way.

Missed this in theaters, how does this compare to the other DCEU films? I do really miss the dark tone of Snyders films. Zack Snyders Justice League was a masterpiece imo. But this looks fun and goofy along the lines of Aquaman...
