I don't think this movie has even seen a legitimate region 1 DVD yet. It really is worth tracking down for genre fans.

I'm with you on that one. Who knows maybe we'll see a Japanese Blu-Ray and we can import it.

http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/title.B.../qx/titles.htm

I've ordered from them many times and they have a wonderful selection of asian films and region-free dvd players.

if you can play region 3 i suggest the Korean special edition
they do put english subs on everything...
due to the subject matter was never released in Italy as well...
avoid the sequel...it's no worth it...

At a horror convention I actually plunked down about $40 for a "Tartan Asia Extreme" edition that is a region 0 NTSC disc. I originally did this because the transfer on the "Starmax" version everyone carries looks like total hell, but it's actually no different, it doesn't look like a bootleg though, which is a plus but the only difference between the two is that there are less special features on the Tartan release.

I don't think this movie will ever be released in America because the filmmakers don't want it to be for some reason. It actually got to the writing stage of being remade here surprisingly.

i was under the impression this didn't get a release here since no one was willing to do the distribution, and take on the thousands of angry protests i could see coming from all forms of organizations if they did considering the subject matter i am sure some would feel the need to censor

[Show spoiler]The antagonist gets blown away by an oozie and gets right back up and talks on the phone. Kind of made it lame.

The truth on why BR never came out here:

Toei saw that Crouching Tiger made $150 million box office, and wanted a major 2000 theater release for the title. It was explained to them that the movie would carry an NC-17, and only a handful of theaters would be willing to carry it, and they refused to cut it down to an "R" because it would cut the heart out of the film. "There would be nothing left". Toei stopped renting out their subtitled print, and refuse to acknowlege the film to anyone from America now, because they can't get what they want.

I had a virtual blank check from 2 different companies to go after it for them, and was basically told to shove it on both occasions. Then the bootleg market killed any value the film would have for release here.

Supposedly New Line picked it up and the sequel as part of their remake package (which would undoubtedly involve college age kids instead of middle schoolers as well as suck). I also highly recommend that you avoid Saving Private Ryan...I mean Battle Royale 2, because it's so unbelieveably bad.
