United Kingdom Battle Royale set for December 13 (Update)

Hey guys.

I was wondering if anyone knew what was going on with Battle Royale in the UK. I've been trying to get hold of the DVD, but after placing several orders, I always get a mail some weeks later saying the item has been discontinued. I just saw on HMV's website, a new release is coming out on the 5th April, from Arrow Films. I've checked out their website, and seems they specialise in world cinema.

I'd read that Tartan UK (the ones who originally put BR out on DVD), had gone bankrupt, with their library passing to a company called Pallisades Media. Does this mean they've sold the BR rights to this Arrow Films? If so, it could be worrying for the prospect of a Blu Ray release, as Arrow Films seem to only be putting out DVDs (well, and VHS :s).

Anyone got a better idea of what's going on?

Arrow do put out Blu-rays. They did Cinema Paradiso and Bicycle Thieves, as well as the Romero Dead flicks, so I imagine that the information you have about them releasing BR is true. Like you said, Tartan went bust, with some of their catalogue being picked up by Palisades and released under the moniker of Tartan Palisades, and some went elsewhere, to companies like Arrow.

I've sent them an email to ask about the DVD release that HMV says is on monday, but no other retailers seem to know about, and also if there will be a Blu Ray release.

Arrow Films is only releasing Battle Royale on DVD only. It will most likely be a port of the original Tartan DVD, but which one is yet to be seen. IIRC, the original Tartan release looked like crap with burnt-in subtitles and everything.

We won't see a BD release until Toei puts out a HD release. For example, Tartan's NTSC 5.1 release of Battle Royale was the same extra transfer from the Japanese DVD.

Since buying Dawn of the Dead Blu for Arrow Films I've nothing but faith in any future Blu-ray releases they have. One of the, if not the best Blu-ray set.

So if they end up doing the Battle Royale Blu, then I'll be happy.

But it seems that Japan is letting European distributors to release BDs before Japan, with the BFI Ozu films coming out soon coded for region B, and "Kamikaze Girls" which was surprisingly region free. Never know, but I'd like to get an upgrade on Battle Royale.

I was always hoping for a Criterion release, but I know they wouldn't want to even touch BRII, and that would be the problem.

Just got a reply from Arrow Films. No mention of the DVD, but it says they'll be releasing Battle Royale on Blu Ray later this year! Woohoo!

Awesome, if it's region free I'll definitely be ordering it.

I hope it isn't an April FfXXXwit;s- I mean Fool's joke... April 1 - the day you don't bother reading any news articles.

Definitely not an April Fool's joke on my part, and I doubt they'd lie in a customer services email! I sent my email on wednesday, and got the reply at 2pm thursday (and April Fools ends at 12 noon?). April Fools is more about pranks and crazy stories, right? This would just be a flat out lie, and can't see them doing that.

Hopefully the Bluray will be the original cut, rather than the extended cut, which, in my opinion, added nothing to the film, but ended up ruining the pace of the original.

Battle Royale would be nice to have on Blu-ray. I remember watching this for the first time on TV not knowing at all what it was about, damn what a shocking ride it was. Brilliant movie!

If you haven't seen Battle Royale 2 yet, don't waste your time and money, it was a huge disappointment.

I'd have to agree with that.

Yeah, wasn't it. It was like Highlander 2 after Highlander...

Agreed on the extended cut being worthless. Virtually all of the added scenes were unnecessary and felt totally out of place.
