The hardcoat should stand up to any kind of normal abuse, even the average blockbuster customer who stores their discs on coarse grit sandpaper when not in use |

I always think it's better to post to an existing thread, otherwise - if I didn't bother finding a relevant thread before posting a new one - I could find that there could be ten other threads on the same issue. It's REALLY annoying when that happens. Last edited by Beery; 07-07-2008 at 06:10 PM. |

If you make scratches radially the disc should work fine - the laser can usually read through a lot of such scratches. It's scratches that run parallel to the disc edge that can cause the disc to fail. Unfortunately, the way discs are stored tends to increase the likelihood of this kind of scratch, because discs will turn on the axis during shipping and storage and if there's grit in there between the disc surface and the box then it could scratch the disc. It happened to me.
Personally I'm beginning to wish that they'd kept the old method - with the Blu-Ray disc inside a protective cassette. |

The only time I have encountered any problems with Blu-ray discs has been with rental discs from video stores.
On two occasions I've had to return discs because of scratches that caused the disc not to load in my PS3. A few other times rental discs haven't loaded because of finger prints (or Lord only knows what) smudged onto the playing surface. In all of those cases I've been able to carefully wipe away the gunk using the same kind of microfiber cloth I use to wipe dust off my HDTV screen. So far, my luck has been better with renting Blu-ray discs than DVD. Over the years I've had to return rental DVDs more frequently. One theory why: Blu-ray is still a relatively high end item. It costs more to rent Blu-ray discs. The folks who pay the premium are more likely to handle those rental discs with care. Every BD I've purchased so far hasn't had any scratches or other issues like that. |

YouTube Scratch Test Your salesman is a moron. The only way to really kill a Blu-ray is crack it. All the Netflix BDs that I got and didn't work all had tiny little stress cracks on them. Probably stepped on or something during transit. Check out the link above, you'll be impressed. |

in short... you have nothing to worry about. The discs will sustain much more harm than a dvd. The salesperson is spreading FUD....

Last week, I received a scratched BD movie (The Water Horse) from Blockbuster Total Access without knowing it was scratched. I tried playing it but it wouldn't load. So I was getting frustrated and wondering if my PS3 is causing problems but when I looked closely on the outer edge of the disc there was a very small scratch. I guess thats all it takes to mess up a BD.

Hey guys.
I just bought Assassin's Creed, and I just discovered a scratch about 1 cm long. To give you and example of what it looks like, it sort of looks like a hair is on the disk (but it's a scratch). Should I return it and get a new disk? Will it affect the playback at all? Seems to be working fine at the moment, I'm just worried it won't work when I get further into the game. |
