Yes they do. For one thing, they'll probably hurt this artist's chance of working with Arrow again, even if that was their decision to share it.

My personal theory as to how their (VS) HDR grades are so bizarre is that they do the initial grading in SDR rec.709, and then map it into HDR rec.2020, because the SDR BDs tend to look more "natural". Either that or they just like that style of grading. If my theory is true, I don't understand why they don't just grade in HDR rec.2020 first in Resolve and then use Dolby's tools to do a more accurate SDR tonemap. That would guarantee better results, but could change their workflow drastically, I guess.

I'm not sure, but a number of labels over the years have had their own style of grading that was unconventional to say the least. Thankfully it seems like more and more grading work is being outsourced to post houses who can seemingly do much better work. I recently watched VS's UHD of Showgirls and thought the grade was fantastic (although it might have been a pre-existing one); The Tenant seemed fine as well but I'm certain I've noticed plenty of strangeness in the others I have.

Now after looking at caps of the UHD and Blu-ray of Road House, I can believe that the HDR is some kind of afterthought. Look at this LOL: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...03727&i=10&l=0

Maybe I should check out the accompanying Blu-rays in the VS UHD releases that I have. I may end up enjoying them more!

Showgirls was modeled after what Paul Verhoeven supervised. Here’s what VS said at the time:

Quote:
Furthermore, we’ve performed extensive exclusive restoration using the source files from Paul Verhoeven’s supervised colour grade to ensure a presentation which looks exactly as intended, but without any of the digital manipulation which has notoriously plagued other releases.

• Newly restored by Vinegar Syndrome from an existing director approved 4K studio master

It's probably a matter of settings:
Whoa, why would you pick that forum name? For shock value?
JCF truly knows his stuff, so implying his settings are off is a rather hot take I'm afraid...

If that were the case, where are the better releases of Southern Comfort, From Beyond and eXistenZ?

Just kidding! If eventually some other label releases Southern Comfort with a more neutral colour grading and all other stats equivalent to or better than the VS release, I'll prolly quadruple dip in a heartbeat!
The other two benefit from the hot look, IMO!

While they only occasionally produce a release of a movie I do care about, their work is usually top notch (hot grading aside!)!

I can't help but think about the artist's Facebook post. "I convinced then to use a clear slip sleeve." Did Arrow just ignore him? Lmao.

Wondering about that too ..Maybe there will be a store exclusive version or something. We'll see, official announcements and Arrow store listings should be posted in about 15 mins or so.

Oh, yeah

Maybe they're punishing him for leaking the title. Taking away his beloved clear slip sleeve.

Just now I'm watching VS's release of Southern Comfort, time stamp 14:00. The grading is all over the place looks to me like it's different in 4 consecutive camera takes of that scene. So yes, the grading requires some work!

I admit, that I wouldn't really know how the movie was shot.
FWIW, Discussions about "correct colour timing" are tedious endeavours, so whatever, I guess.
Still, VS releases are frequently reported exhibiting hot colour timing, so I'll stand my ground with my earlier statement.
