Also, if you're interested in DirecTV, two fairly new features:

You can set up programs to record remotely by the web -- computer and phone

Haven't set it up yet, but there is an On Demand feature to record programs, including past programs from some TV stations, via the Internet.

Yeah, I could fork over a fortune to add to my television programming, but I'd rather buy blu-rays at that point. Excessive HD programming gets expensive.

I have recently received a notice through cox that their HD programming is expanding...

They were also good about showing NFL Network HD during games and SuperBowl week, hopefully they'll add it full time soon.

Blu-rays sir, is that stimulating enough? Dircet TV is fairly reliable for service. When it comes to programming there are stations being added and the prices increasing without agreement from the customers. i do not see a need for excessive amount of channels covering any one topic or adding channels that are not requested or of interest.

In the last year I've had Dish, Comcast, AT&T Uverse and DirecTV. DirecTV beats them all, hands down for a number of reasons.

1. Price. DirecTV is easily $40 a month cheaper for the "Works" package (all premiums and HD) than Dish. AT&T is second cheapest and Comcast is the most expensive with the fewest channels.

2. Channels. Dish and DirecTV are neck and neck here, but DirecTV has more available satellite space for expansion as well as more birds going up in the next 2 years. Dish had a widely publicised satellite failure earlier this year that has put them behind. Comcast and AT&T aren't even close.

3. Quality. DirecTV is superior in PQ over any other offering I've experienced. Dish over-compresses and down-rezzes their HD channels in order to get more channels on too few satellites (See #2). AT&T is just plain horrible with interlacing errors and extreme overcompression. Comcast would be second best in this regard.

4. Customer Service. None of them are great, but DirecTV is the best of the bunch.

I am making a tough choice here as well. Its either directv or dish. I plan to do the installation myself as I have installed everything in this house form the ground up. We are doing 2 rooms only. I am buying the land form my mother soon and am moving in 2 years (hopefully) and I have to get a house built. If I am on a contract will I have some outrageous fees from dish? I dont care about HD channels.

If it is an FCC violation, it is done all over Orange County, CA with Cox. My housing tract also has an agreement for basic (which we don't use any longer as I have the Cox HD DVR - that sucks - and I'm getting SOOOO ready to switch to DirectTV. Even though Da Bears are gonna have a tough year, I've been here 8 years and miss my Sunday football :-(

1 word for all of you Free2Air, 1x fee of 500 dollars point your dish right at the network satellite and boom free football games including the Thursday games that NFL wants to charge a boatload for. As long as you do not point at DTV or Dish satellites this is perfectly legal. you can even get dishes that have motorized carriages for relocating so as long as you know the NBC CBS and ABC sat coordinates your good to go.

Also no monthly fees

Just a quick example of DirecTV service: After 3 months of trouble-free use, the HDMI port on my HDDVR failed (for whatever reason) and after about 20 minutes of trying to troubleshoot it, they said they would mail me a new unit. The next day it arrived FedEX overnight
