I was looking at getting an 805...While looking on amazon I noticed that the price for the silver is more than the black, also some of the reviews (9 of them) said that the receiver over heated and stopped working. After reading this I am not sure if I want to get this receiver... Can anyone tell me why there is a price difference? I was looking at the 805 last week and the black was more than the silver and now it is less.

Amazon's prices fluctuate often on electronics. Sometimes the prices go up, sometimes down.

Question Just got 805 last week

I'd like to request some info from the past and current Onkyo 805 owners. I haven't set up the Odyssey Cal. Mic yet due to very well pleased with manual adjustments I made. To those who currently have, if I run the Cal. mic will it make a much more significant improvement in sound? Did someone already try this and end up disappointed and went back to manual cal?

My system consists of the following:

Mitsubish WD-Y65 1080P DLP 65" tv
Onkyo TX-S805

Samsung BD-P1000 via HDMI (latest firmware updated was 1.3 and plays ALL I put in it without any problems, freezing, or ejecting dvds even the latest BD discs)
fyi heard lots of negatives on this BD-P1000 but I have yet to experience any problems. Not a single bad disc can't believe it due to bad reviews on it.

Monster Powerbar 1100
Comcast Motorola HD receiver 1080i via HDMI
Polk Audio RTi towers, FXi surrounds, CSI3 center channel, TWO Cerwin Vega 10" 300w subs (car audio history so I'm used to 150+ decibles so needed two subs cause one sub wasn't cutting it for me)

I'm not a perfectionist but I must say my wife and I absolutely LOVE the video and audio setup I currently have. Heating not an issue due to big but quiet fan setup in back of system. ONLY thing I'm missing is the Dolby True HD and DTS Master HD due to BD-P1000 not decoding this. Oh well not upgrading yet ONLY for this. Anyways any negative experiences by anyone please let me know and definitely would like to know about the pros/cons of the Audyssey Cal.

Thanks,
carlos

I also have purchased the 805 and have found that the Audessey MultEQ XT
does a better job at setting up speaker delays by measuring acoustics with the Audessey mic attachment. By factoring in 8 different listening positions, Audessey gives a more even and enjoyable listening level with less distortion while correcting time and frequency issues.
Others have stated that by using Audessey they have seen an overall drop in amplifier output power. I believe Audessey is preventing overdrive and distorted sound output by lowering overall amplifier output, with more emphasis on clean distortion free sound.
As for your Blu-Ray player being unable to decode the new lossless audio codecs, specifically DTS-HD & TrueHD, this is not a problem with the Samsung BD-P1000, because if you go into the menu's and select BitStream output, the player will send the new Hidef codecs to your Onkyo 805 for decoding which is really what you want.. You should see the 805 interface change from hdmi to TrueHD or DTS-HD by doing this.. Hope this helps you.

stupid question guys

my samsung ln46a650 displays 1080p quite well and i set my 360 and ps3 to 1080p

however i'm thinking of getting the
Onkyo TX-SR606

and it says that it only upscales to 1080i but delivers 1080p content in 1080p

if i set my 360 to 1080p and play a game...won't it downscale through the receiver?

looking at this angle you do not see it, but the speaker wire goes into the red/black circular knobs

Question Convince me... or not.

You know, with the minor differences between the Onkyo 705 and 805, I'm having a hard time going for the gusto and getting the 805.

My understanding is the differences are:

805 has more power output (don't think I need it)
705 has less heat-up (I like this...)
805 has 3 zones versus 705's 2 zones (can't imagine needing three)
705 costs less (I like this)
Both have 3 HDMI inputs (a draw)
Both decode HD-MA and Dolby TruHD (if you need that kind of thing)
805 has better DAC's (as a layman, I'm not sure I'd hear the difference)

So, I'm calling on the heavy hitters to ask them if there's anything beyond what I've listed to REALLY make the 805 worth the extra money.

All replies welcome... thanks.

805 can run 4 ohm speakers
805 has more power
805 has the THX processing mode
805 has Burr Browns
805 has the THX Ultra certification for larger home theater layouts

Basically the way you look at the 2 is the 705 is more suited for a smaller to midsized living room, perhaps even bedroom uses. The 805 has the extra oomph needed for larger spaces and speakers etc.

The 805 is THX Certified. It's stronger.
The 606 is a newer model. For medium application it's pretty much the best you can get

All of the newer models do: the 605, 705, 805, 875, 905 and 606.

I think that they may have a few models from the previous lineup that accept audio over HDMI as well.

One more question, why do most people buy the 605? Why not other models?

So would you guys say that the new 606 model is a good entry level receiver to get into? my room is 18x12 and you can see my setup in my sig. was thinking of getting the 606 so i can get the audio decoded instead of still listening to the BD's in DD or plain DTS.

It should be noted, according to the manuals on Onkyo's website for the TX-SR806, TX-SR876 and TX-NR906, that the high end models from Onkyo have fixed one or two issues, but removed some features.

1) The new models no longer feature Burr Brown DAC's - but Cirrus Logic DAC's. Cirrus Logic were used in quite a number of Marantz SACD products. Which is better? It depends on how they're implented and the components around them.

2) The new models no longer support DSD>Analog direct conversion. All DSD signals are processed into PCM, regardless of whether direct is used or not. This is not mentioned on the list of features (in fact it says DSD Direct is supported), but the manual states it quite clearly that it is not.

3) Support for 24/192 dts-ma is now available. On the -xx5 models all 24/192 dts-ma sources are processed as 24/96

4) Support for 24/192 Dolby TrueHD multi-channel is now available. On the -xx5 models all 24/192 TrueHD sources are processed at 2-channel, regardless of how many channels were in the source.

Cheers.
