Default Mad at Sony

I'm mad at Sony! But for a different reason. I have two Sony videocameras (a Hi-8 and a Digital-8) that crapped the bed leaving me no way to watch or transfer my old tapes. My F707 still camera flash died too. Granted I got about 13,000 images out of it but still!

The PS3 is such a great BD player that I can almost forgive them- but not quite.

While I like the higher bit-rate of DTS-HD MA's core track, "lossless" is "lossless" to me.

That was back then when there was a heated war, this is now. If you want BD adoption to take off, you need to make sure that there is a BD equivilent to almost every DVD you put out, otherwise people are going to just continue to buy DVDs. not acceptable.
While I somewhat agree with this since they created the "assumption" of subsequent releases with the release of "Season Three", you honestly can't blame the studio if the sales weren't there.

I rarely buy games (a few a year), so I could care less by a delay of a game, and I don't see anything about "Home" to get that excited about.

The only title delays I'm upset with are D&D releases with DVD. While I will pre-order LOA on Blu-ray, they can wait 5 years for all I care... just as long as they do it right when it comes out.

These two companys have clearly been the front runners of this "WAR" but now that it's all over all anybody is doing is kicking them in the jewels!
Yes - it can !
On your second point - many uncomfortable allies are mad during times of "war". When the war is over - its back to business as usually
(Just a little humor I own some Sony products - only ES stuff - hey what about a PS3ES that might make twitch a little).

Well just about all of us if we are on this forum, to some degree at least. But j6p will not have a 7.1 (or 7.4) set up. (I heard of a 7.2 but isn't .4 a bit overkill?)
Still, i would love to see more 7.1 features, but most people will not care about that since they will have 5.1 at the most.

I can see how some ppl want the uncompressed audio, but I am a videophile, not an audiophile. Although I love the HD audio, its the video I live for. And the video take up a lot more space and processing power so it should get all it can. Compression on audio is not as obvious as on video to most people.
By using TrueHD, they give you HD audio, so close to the original uncompressed that I am sure it could fool many die-hard audiophiles, plus they give us better video and more extras. The more they can put on he box, the more value people see in it (like extras and games and online content and HD video and HD audio etc...).

I am all behind Sony on this one, it is a great move to promote the format, even though it does present potential problems with compatibility with some set-ups. I am not telling you to go out and buy a PS3, but as the most popular BD player it has no problem decoding these formats. I am sure other players have the same ability, perhaps even better than what the PS3 does. It just means that to get the best HD audio and video, you need to get the best HD set-up of your choice.
That's why we differ, I'm an audiophile and current set-up doesn't have a problem decoding (just that copy-protection HDMI requirement that forces 48/16 downres for TrueHD and DTS HD Master). I'm biding my time in hope for some breakthroughts that I can just put in my system and be happy. Biggest wish is a HD soundcard with full Bandwidth HDMI. It will pay to be patient with this one. Still, I will enjoy 7.1/5.1 LPCM on whatever gives it to me.

P.S. I don't think 7.4 is overkill - have you ever heard bass come from the back of your room along the sides and then travel to the front? That's crazy! I heard it in the SD version of "Sky Captian..." on one of the robot scenes - it was totally hot! Ever since then I've looked to have a sub on every channel. (HT magazine did this about 10 years ago with astounding results - this was back when AC-3 was all the rage).

They use TrueHD so they can fit more dubbed sountracks in.

And yes I know most people dont have 7.1 setups. But bluray has the space and specs for 7.1 setups. I would much prefer the main track to be in 7.1 than have a bunch of pointless extras. Sony should be putting the effort in to show off ALL the bells and whistles of bluray.

I am not mad at Sony, but I do agree with some of what the OP is saying. They have to make blu-ray as ubiquitous as DVD. I was waiting for them to put out Seasons 1&2 of Rescue Me as my reason for not buying. I've heard great things but I refuse to start in the middle and I refuse to buy DVDs pretty much at this point as well. Had they launched a Season 1-3 blu box set I'd have already owned it.

Weeds 1&2 sold well on blu and my guess is because it started at the beginning. Bet Weeds 3 does very well too based on the owner base.

Box sets are tricky and most of them on BD have been totally FUBARed.

The only thing I could be mad at Sony at is that LEGENDS OF THE FAL doesn't have a release date!

Seriously, after a bad start, they have managed to put out quality products but the real issue is that the BDA didn't mandate at least one lossless codec.

With Disney experimenting with lossless tracks I think the road is clear that lossless will become the default audio format. Sadly those 1st and 2nd generation owners lose out because of this.

As much as I want Home, I'd rather they take longer and get it right than push EA-level crap on us.

Rescue Me does bother me. It is bad enough having early seasons of shows in DVD with later on Blu, but having to ALTERNATE viewings? That's terrible!

I'm not the target audience but I'm looking forward to seeing it implemented just to see how they do with it. Seems like it would be a really though thing to pull off. Anyway, hopefully they nail it so people won't be upset for having waited so long.

No- not forever but maybe more than 20 hours? That's about how much recording time I got out of my Digital-8 camera. I rarely watched the tapes, so I didn't burn it out that way. I don't think I'm asking too much.

I love lossless audio tracks.

I also think Dolby TrueHD is a good thing. Why? Because people get the best of both worlds. If you own something capable of decoding it, you get full lossless sound. If you don't own a capable decoder, you still get the 1.5mps core, which stills sounds far better than Dolby Digital, to my ears.

I believe Sony is doing what is best for the customer by providing this codec.

Lossless is lossless. PCM = TrueHD. Plus with TrueHD they can dedicate more bit-rate to the video or extras.

Season 3 probably sold very poorly for what it cost to put it together. You better believe Sony, as a business, weighed the pros and cons and decided that Rescue Me Season 3 would not put them in a better position compared to the costs involved. Otherwise they would have released in on Blu.

All software from all companies on all platforms go through delays.

One movie, one extra year. It's just business.

The moral of the story is, life's too short to be mad at a business for acting like... wait for it... a business.

I think you're confusing TrueHD for DTS-HD MA.

I'm disappointed at all the studios. It's been a few months since there's been any blu-ray I want, new or catalog.

Yeah that's not right. You get either a 448kbps core, or a 640kbps core. 1.5 is the DTS-HD core.

As for me, there should be (and in most cases isn't) no difference between PCM and Dolby TrueHD. In fact, Sony uses the 24-Bit master to create the TrueHD track, while they lower the PCM tracks to 16-Bit.

One thing I am pissed about are the old adds they'd use which advertised movies like Bad Boys II. It's 2 years after they started using this title (along with Lawrence of Arabia, Charlie's Angels, Once Upon A Time In Mexico and a few others) to promote Blu-Ray, without it actually being on Blu-Ray or even being announced that they're working on it/them. Not cool.
