I'd suggest a rental. It's not an "action" movie, but it's a great slow burner that I really like.

if you saw the matrix first, you may not like this movie b/c you're expecting the same type of movie that the matrix is. if you want to watch this movie, don't expect anything, just watch it. i put the matrix as one of my all time favorites, but i still love the feel of dark city. definately worth a rental.

Roger Ebert uses this film in his classes. It's one of his all time favorite movies that he did a commentary track for it.

Ebert still teaches? I thought the poor guy really lost it when his buddy Siskel passed away.

That's a pretty unfair and uninformed accusation you're making, considering that The Matrix's script had been finalized long before Dark City went into production. Remember that the Wachowskis were forced by Waner to do a smaller movie (Bound, 1996) before they were given the budget to make The Matrix. They pitched The Matrix to Warner in 1995. I doubt they were aware of Proyas' story, if Proyas had even written it by that point.

And the "reused set" argument is pointless, as The Matrix was the next major film to shoot at Fox Studios Sydney after Dark City...most productions re-use sets where they can to keep costs down.

Both movies borrow heavily from numerous sources...Heinlein, Dick, Beaudrillard, noir films, Lewis Carroll, Terry Gilliam...to say either one is anything truly original is essentially a lie. They're both pastiches of various literary and filmic styles and stories.

In the end, both are excellent movies covering similar storytelling ground. Both have their merits, both have their faults, but they're each excellent for very different reasons.

I'll admit it...I thought this movie was boring...but that's becasue I'm a fan of the Matrix and only saw DC once of course years after the Matrix. Give it another shot? Maybe in due time.

Truly a wonderful film. I saw this opening night when it came out in theaters. I talked a group of 8 people into going. Most of them passed out (not from being bored but drunk) Three of us though walked out blown away though.

The film never left me and I bought it on DvD as soon as it was released. I did the same a few weeks back when it came out on Blu. The Blu release is just fantastic and the directors cut actually made the film even better.

I will never tire of this movie, nor forget it. No matter what Alex Proyas directs I will watch because of his direction on this film.

The original "Matrix". Way better than that Wachowski trash.

I thought this movie was pretty good. Definately better the The Matrix. I can't stand Keanu Reeves's acting.

DC was a little on the boring side.
The Matrix was better. Better action, bigger budget and more thought provoking. Not to mention, ground breaking special effects.

BTW, which one did better in the Box Office?? I'll give you a hint, it wasn't Dark City.

Make sure you watch the director's cut instead of the theatrical version. The theatrical version has a opening dialogue that gives everything away.
