RUR knows what my dream 2 channel speakers are - they are vintage but I just love'em - Martin Logan CLS-II's - a total ELS. One day I will have these -and that will be a lovey day. Don't look away from the gently used market - many people are panicing because of the economy and getting rid of some nice gear for pennies (panic scored me 2 pairs of Klipsch Heresy's for 150.00 a pair, that they could have sold easily just by parting them out on Ebay for 3times that amount). In the military - when someone was PCSing or if they were divorcing - everyone would look and see what they were going to get rid of - odds are Stereo gear was high on the list - high-end gear if they were ever stationed in Japan or Germany. We'd jump on it!!! The used market is prime right now - take a look and see what deals are to be had

Hi,
I apologize if I am doing anything wrong. I am not familiar with postings, threads, forums and such. You will know why after you see the age of my stereo equipment.

I found this site and I noticed you all are very knowlegable about stereo equipment. I have googled model numbers from my Onkyo equipment and cannot find any information on it or its value! I can't believe my equipment is considered vintage. I am not that old.

Can you or anyone you know help me find the value of this equipment. I want to sell all these pieces. Someone offered $100 for all of the pieces. I was trying to find out if this was a fair price. He told me that the problem I had was the age behind my equipment. The nerve, it still rocks. There isn't any nicks and I keep it clean. I have all the instruction manuals, remotes and the original bill of sale dated 1/14/89. I still use it and it all works and sounds great. I just don't need this big equipment anymore. I want something smaller. Here is a list of the Onkyo pieces.

Model Discription
T-4140 Quartz synthesized fm stereo/am tuner
TA-RW44 Stereo cassette tape deck
M-5130 stereo power amplifier
P-3150V infrared Wireless remote controlled stereo preamplifier
DX-C206/C106 compact dis automatic changer
CB-58v Audio rack
onkyo original speakers with this set (big)
Technics SH 8055 equalizer

I had the CP-1114A auto-return turntable that I threw away when I stopped using records. I wish I didn't. But I still have the manual.

I have 2 Infinity speakers It reads studio monitor on the inside panel with 2 dial controls. They are 33" high with 3 circles inside, the bottom one measuring 12".

Thank you in advance for any help. Darlene

Darlene,

Very few makes and models of vintage equipment retain value well. Onkyo isn't among them and your equipment truly is worth pennies on the dollar at this point - that's the way the cookie crumbles in the used electronics market. The Infinity speakers may be worth more than anything else but, without a model #, I simply can't tell.

Your best bet is to join Audiokarma.org and post in this thread: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=128 Read and follow the forum rules, especially the one which says you can ask what it's worth, but you can't say that your doing so to sell it. Folks there are incredibly helpful.

Good luck!

/Ken

But do eductate me though!
Well, in that vein, another question does come to mind. How "final" is this purchase intended to be? That is, is this going to be your "last turntable purchase", or do you foresee upgrades in the future as funds permit?

Either way, one option is to hang on to your (relatively new IIRC) Grado Platinum cartridge, and use that for the time being (even if you're planning to sell/trade in your Revolver).

As for phono stages; if you can stretch to $1000, the Sutherland Ph.3D comes highly recommended.

Quote:
I've read that as well, however, at $5,000 for the Oracle table, I would now be looking at $7-8000 for the TT alone and that is a bit much. I don't want the total budget to exceed $5-6,000 as a maximum. The VPI will accomplish that.
Very true. Another option (again, depending on how "final" this round of upgrades is meant to be) would be to get the Delphi and the cheapest SME compatible arm (and use your Grado Platinum cartridge). Then, in a couple of years as finances permit, splurge on the SME Series V or Series IV (the latter is a fair bit cheaper and a better match with the Delphi aesthetically; I wonder if the Oracle branded SME arm is a silver Series V?)

It's also worth bearing in mind that in this troubled economy, audio dealers might be quite happy to negotiate a lower price for the Oracle (or any other gear for that matter). For example, you might be able to persuade your dealer to part with a Delphi and SME 309 for your $5K-$6K maximum; if you use your Grado Platinum, you're all set! (Yet another option is to buy the Delphi with something like the Rega RB301 arm, and upgrade to an SME later. In this case, you'd also have to replace the arm board.)

Yes, I do like spending other peoples' money!

Ken, Thanks for your help. I got on theweb site you suggested and it is very intimidating to me. If the onkyo system is worth pennys on the dollar the I guess $100 was a very good offer since I paid $550 back in 1989. The speakers are models 2=Infinity studio monitor 120s.

Darlene,

Looks like the Infinity's are worth ~$50 http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthr...&threadid=9692. The rest of the gear is worth essentially what you can get for it. Sorry there's not better news!

I'm familiar with your amp - its not worth much on the resale lot (integra's are where the money is). 105 Watt power amp. http://www.eserviceinfo.com/download...yo_M-5130.html
thats a link to your amp manual. Your Infinitys are part of the SM series I gather that they are SM120's or SM122's with an efficency rating of 100db these might fetch a litte something on Ebay.

Hi Rich! I'm ashamed to say that I haven't followed up on my own thread in some time, but I did some serious thinking about what you mentioned regarding a "final" buy. And I think I've come to some decisions in that regard.

The TT will be the last buy! But it is very important that whatever I chose has the ability to offer future upgrades. I'm sure that both the VPI Aries3 and the Oracle have that to offer. So that means I need to make a decision in the next few months. I'd love to get the Oracle, but am not leaning there just yet. It's a significant step-up (financially) from the Aries and it would mean delaying my purchase. That in itself is fine (I'm patient), I just want to be sure that my decision is properly thought out.

Regarding my Revolver TT. I've mentioned the "sentimental" value this table has for me, so a sell/trade is not an option. I will own this table forever.

Right now I'm doing some tweaking on my HT setup to maximize its quality (specifically better cabling) and that is the Christmas present to myself for this year. I've dedicated 2009 as the year of the Turntable and it's still a toss-up! LOL!

BTW: How did you like the Vantages with your Prologues?

You may want to contact Dave Schulte of the Upgrade Company to upgrade some components for you. Dave has upgraded most of my electronic components including:

4 Aragon Palladium 1K monoblock amps
Krell Kav a/250 3 channel amp
Onkyo PR-SC885 Phono/Pre
Denon DVD 5910
Denon DVD 3800BDCI Blu-ray
classic Dahlquist DQ10 speakers- totally rebuilt; Dave and I further redid and upgraded these to compete with $10,000- $30000 speakers

Dave also sells his line of Time Portal ICs, Speaker Cables, and Power Cords.

Generally, Dave suggests that for every $1000 you spend with him for upgrades will give at least a $10,000 return.

I do not get any money for referals, I am just a very very happy customer many many times over.

Dave's website is:

Very wise. When you're spending this kind of money, you have to be sure.

Balancing the desire for immediate gratification against getting something better is always hard. I'm in a similar quandry with my speaker upgrade (see below).

Gotcha. Somethings just can't be sold!

Now that is funny! :-)

I was a bit concerned before I hooked them up, but my fears were unfounded. The Vantages and ProLogues are a great match--one I highly recommend!

Sadly, the Vantages are now back at the dealer, and I'm borrowing a pair of PSB Synchrony Twos. So far, they're a major disappointment; for $3,500 I expect more. I certainly won't be sorry to see them go back next week, when I'll try a pair of Reference 3a Veenas. I'm not sure how well they'll fare though, because the Vantages set a very high bar!

My heart says just order the Spires now and be done with it, but my analytical mind says that should evaluate more alternatives first (a bit like you and the turntables). So I'll save up for a few more weeks, and hopefully by Xmas I'll have (or will have ordered) my new speakers. Right now, the Spires are the most likely candidate.

Can't have that, so I've purchased these instead:

VTL MB 450 Signature monoblocks. Perhaps not so zippy to look at, but they do provide 225W triode into 4Ω (nominal for the ML's) or 500W tetrode. That's per channel. Enough to drive CLX's with ease, if/when I cross that bridge.....

Should have 'em in a couple of weeks.

John,

With such an awesome budget- the possibilities are endless! I read somewhere in this thread that you're looking at speakers at round 5kish. I humbly suggest Dynaudios. Either the contour 3.4s(which I have) at 6K MSRP or the newer Focus 360 6.5K MSRP but has the Esotar 2 tweeter. With the current economy, you shouldn't have any problems asking for a lower price that suits your budget.I don't know if you know this, but Dynaudio used to make drivers and tweeters for Totem and other companies. Dyns really mate well with simaudio. And for your taste in music, I'm sure you wont be disappointed with the above brands.

Hey Rhett,

Just read your post in your thread...kinda funny we coincided on diferent threads there.

The NEW speakers are a few years down yet and the Totems will remain in my HT setup, although like I said in your post, I'm toying with the idea of upgrading them to the Hawks. I've got "upgraditis" badly!

Default New TT ordered!

I'm really excited to get my new TT and I should have it within the next month or so. My dealer doesn't normally carry it, but through his connections and long-time associations in the business, was able to secure one for me. I'm pleased as hell about this as I think it is important to develop a good relationship with your local supplier, regardless of the product.

The last part of 2008 and the beginning of this 2009 new year have been very trying for me. I won't go into all of the details, but those things along with the economic uncertainty has led me on a slightly different path. I cannot justify a decision between the 2 TT's of my choice right now. The price point is too rich for me, but one day perhaps I can revisit. In case you were wondering, those TT's would have been a decked-out VPI Aries3 or an entry level Oracle Delphi V. But that was then.

This is now. And this is what I chose and ordered! I did an extensive search and read reviews on literally a dozen different TT's, but I kept coming back to this one. I auditioned it locally at another dealer for about an hour and was impressed. Certainly well worth the pricepoint and I think that given my circumstance I made a good choice, but (of course) that's my own personal justification.

Maybe I shouldn't say this, but the TT appeals to me from an aesthetic point-of-view as well. I love the clean lines and from what I saw, the build and finish is top-notch.

My REVOLVER (my beloved Revolver) will remain with me and one day I might do something crazy and get it modded, if I could find a place to do it. One thing is for sure...it will always have a place in my setup (even just to remind me).

John,

I know that this was a tough decision for you. I hope that the Marantz TT performs well and lives up to everything that you want. Use it in good health and when you are ready you may want to upgrade.

A judicious search on audiogon might yield these Macs: http://www.mcintoshlabs.com/products...-amplifier.asp

I'd start with a pair and then move into a set of Revels. Leave everything else alone. It's a waste of time.

Good Luck!
