I actually own Song of the SOuth on DVD. I think the reason for Disney not to release it: racism. I read it somewhere

I got one on DVD few years ago. I think my local HMV still stock it. I think it's not one of Disney titles that got retracted after some time. (Disney vault thing)

Sadly the claims of the movie being racist are inaccurate at best.

Considering Uncle Remus is the most intelligent and compassionate character in the movie.

The white characters look like complete asses by comparison.

well, that is what I heard some time ago, that it's about racism and slavery. I forgot the source.

Question: is Bobby Driscoll in the movie the same as Bobby Driscoll in Peter Pan?

No. It actually has nothing to do with racism or slavery. It's set after slaves were freed.

And yes, it's the same actor.

The packaging on the recent Platinum DVD does not allege to be the OAR. I know I saw it in theatres on a re-release but I can't specifically recall that very well; mostly my mind's eye sees the 4:3 picture from my old VHS. The problem with the newly released widescreen presentation is that it looks as if it were cropped from an existing 4:3-type print---there's clearly visual information being lost, and character heads/ears/tails/what-have-you have a maddening tendency to break the top of the frame. I'm not sure that was evident in the film's original or subsequent theatrical runs...

I recently saw Song of the South, it's not bad.

I believe Disney will release it as part of the treasures series, in the collector tin. They release the Donald Duck Nazi Germany cartoons as part of that series.

There was a lot of talk about it, I heard even Maya Angelou was set to introduce it, but met with some resistance and backed out.

Eisner wasn't sure if they should build Splash Mountain, and in the 1980s releases Song of the South the theaters again, and no one cared. So Splash mountain was a go.

Disney is going to be very careful how they release Song of the South. They need to make sure it's marketed to adults, this isn't a movie you want parents to set very young kids infront of and just leave. They need to understand the context. With an introduction before the film with some of the history of the south and "look how far we have come since the late 1800's when this was set? Look how far we have come since the 1940s when this was made?" If you could show that the Actor who stared in this movie wasn't allowed to go to the premier back in 1949! Then contrast that with how many black people today are super stars, and doing very well in politics.

It may be a while but someday it will come out of the vault.

Please read this post and look at the piccies very carefuly:

All you ever wanted to know about millimeters but were afraid to ask

90% of Standard (flat) Widescreen movies' prints ARE in "4:3" because the camera has either a 1.375 wide Camera Aperture or a 1.33 Camera Aperture (Super-35). You want the OAR (Original Aspect Ratio) which is the IAR (Intended Aspect Ratio) and the C-FAR (Composed-For Aspect Ratio), not the CAR (Camera Aperture Ratio) or the PAR (Protected Aspect Ratio) made for the OVAFAMAR (Old Video Abandoned Format Aspect Ratio)

Hey the original CAR of xmen-3 is 1.33 and Magneto and Xavier look really old when they go fetch the young Jean Grey. You want that as the "OAR"? no I don't think so.

Are you insane?

1) The words "remake" and "classics" NEVER go together well. It's a two-edged sword. If it's shot-for-shot, people will carp because they'll have seen it before (even those who have never seen it...ref. King Kong). If the script is "rethought", everyone will hate it because it's tampering with a classic.

2) HD treatment on ultra old classics will add a great deal. It's already been well-established on this forum that 1080p transfers of old film stock will almost always look better than DVD, unless the film looks like it's been dragged behind a Buick to begin with.

I'm sure that if Disney is going to go through the trouble of releasing these films of Blu-Ray, they'll take great pains to make sure that the transfer is a revelation.

Disney's chairman stated at their March 2007 shareholders meeting that they we going to "look at it."

Unfortunately, this movie doesn't fit in well with Disney's current marketing strategy (having a multi-racial cast of kids endlessly hawk in on Disney Channel promos like "Movie Surfers", etc.)

Ideally, Disney should allow someone like Criterion to restore this movie (and make them promise to release it on Blu-ray). I doubt Disney would do that, however.

I can almost hear W. Disney rolling over in his grave.....

This should never, and will never happen.....computer animation is not the
be all and end all....
