It's because the earlier episodes were created digitally in SD.

There will NEVER EVER be HD versions of those episodes.

NEVER EVER.

I think I heard the latest episodes are created in HD and matted to 4:3 (of which the new Star Wars special is among them). They could do HD on BD. But older episodes, if they ever appear on BD, will be 480p or upscaled.

DVD's got a long way to go and will in my opinion run for as long as Blu Ray is viable. It's going to take a very long time to get people to give up DVD. The difference is just not as blindingly obvious to the majority with their (relatively) tiny little TVs, than DVD was to VHS. Convenience is what people are swayed by. Downloads will make them switch, but the infrastructure has a good 5 years to go.

Err, Snow White was filmed on 35mm. That's higher definition than Blu Ray. Anything on 35mm is perfect for transfer to Blu Ray (though old films have a lot of grain which upset a lot of people who don't understand ).

Anyway, as for Family Guy. I'm surprised the 4:3 attitude is still going in the US. Do most people still have those monster 4:3 rear projection sets? !!. In Europe we went widescreen 15 years ago or so, even in SD, whilst the US were buying huge square TVs.

Has Seth not seen Futurama in HD on a widescreen HD TV?

Then where's Arrested Development? I don't know, re-runs of this show are really frequent and it isn't a big jump at all in HD. I doubt it will be worth it for a show are simply drawn as this.

What is ignorant is the people saying shows, such as this will NEVER EVER be on blu ray because it will never be of benefit. Anything that was ever on vhs is now on dvd. So what are you trying to prove/say ? Do you think your the big man on campus policing the forums telling ppl their comments are ignorant. How about you tell me how this comment is ignorant after I post it because I would love to hear it again.

No no no.. this is COMPLETLY different. DVD is 720x480 or 640x480 in case of None Anamorphic or 4x3 video.

Family Guy is ANIMATED and DRAWN at 640x480 in COMPUTER. You're stuck with this resolution FOR LIFE. the only way for it to be better is to redraw EVERY SINGLE FRAME at 1080p. Since it's not CGI, it's a no no because of the cost.

Animation like Southpark are made in Maya in 3D (even if it's 2D) since the 2nd season i think. So they can just Re-Render everything at 1080p. It's not free but i can be done at a meager cost.

A lot of Japanese Animation have gone this threament. They are on Bluray but offer minimal improvement (because it's Hardware Upscaled vs Player Upscaled) that does not justify the higher cost of Bluray right now.

You're joking, right?

Snow White was animated on painted cels and filmed. It was created on a high fidelity analog medium.

Family Guy was animated digitally with only SD resolution. They can't go back to the source material and rescan at a higher resolution. No matter what they do, those episodes of Family Guy will only ever exist as digital images at 640x480. They will NEVER be 1440x1080 (which is 1080p resolution for a 4:3 image). Family Guy was created on a low quality digital medium and it will be that way forever.

They might put Family Guy episodes on BD some day, but the older ones will NEVER be HD. Best you could hope for would be a good upscale combined with quality lossless audio. Actually, given the fact they're putting the second Star Wars special out on BD, I'd say that BD release for Family Guy is likely for the future. But don't expect to see old episodes in HD. I don't think the first season was even animated on cels.

And as for the thing with 4:3, it's perfectly reasonable. All along the aspect ratio has been 4:3, and it makes complete sense to continue with that, even if it means pillarboxing is required. Futurama going for 16:9 made sense in that they were direct-to-video movies, and furthermore, I expect given the subject matter that Futurama might have been 16:9 from the beginning if they had the power to.

Notice that American Dad and Family Guy maintain 4:3, while the Cleveland Show moved to 16:9. They're just trying to remain consistent.

Sorry to revive such an old thread. But i have heard that the newer episode of family guy are now being produced in HD. So the newer season releases of the DVDs should soon be accompanied by a Blu Ray version to.
Does anyone know if this is actually correct?

New episodes are definitely in HD.

A Blu-ray release is possible given that they put the Star Wars specials on BD and the episodes are definitely produced in HD now, but it's not a given. They could very easily decide to not do a BD release when it comes to the volumes.

For example, the Vol 9 DVD is quoted as being widescreen. This means it's comprised of episodes after they made the shift to a definite HD production. But Vol 9 is only available on DVD. No Blu-ray. Other shows have released stuff on Blu-ray before only to go back to DVD-only for later episodes. Fox might not put anything of Family Guy on BD for the foreseeable future.

Perhaps the Family Guy "powers that be" are waiting to see IF South Park early seasons will make it to blu-ray, as Trey & Matt said they were working on them. Just a wild guess, seeing as the shows probably draw similiar interests.

Am I the only one who doesn't care whether the early seasons are good quality visually? I just want the audio in surround lossless which they should be able to do easily.

Just up convert the 4:3 image so it fills 1080p of information on our modern displays w/ the obvious need of pillarbox. That's fine with me. It will be as good as can be. Which again...is fine with me!!

Maybe it's because I only rented the seasons on DVD so Im ready to buy this show, but never on DVD and compromise a higher quality option that may make my money worthwhile.

I have to agree with you there. I dont mind either if earlier episodes look a little rougher than the new ones. And i dont think a Blu Ray release of earlier volumes would make any sense. However the newer episodes which we can see are being in produced in HD now, should and hopefully will get a Blu Ray release. Theres so many benifits to them. Most obviously being the amazing PQ, which we have already seen in the Star Wars episode releases.

One thing I've learned about a possible BD release of any given title is "Never Say Never". They said the same thing about Star Trek: The Next Generation. Initially, it was considered to be too costly to convert the show to HD. Granted, it will still be 4:3, but it has been converted to HD for the upcoming BD release. I guess either they found a large sum of money or had a change of heart.

**Let me clarify: If Family Guy was released on BD, it probably wouldn't be "true" HD. I'm thinking it would be similar to Blue Harvest. The point I'm making is that if they really wanted to, they could release the entire series on BD. The PQ may not be consistant throughtout the series though.**

Im really surprised Fox haven't released the newer "made-in-HD" seasons of both Family Guy and American Dad on Blu-ray.

They are popular shows, so I think they would sell well, and Fox does release Futurama on Blu-ray now.

Whenever Fox decide to release them, I'd definitely buy them in the UK

I'm disappointed. The last few episodes of Volume 9 were the first HD episodes. Only released on DVD. Now, Volume 10 is announced and once again, only standard DVD, no Blu-ray in sight.

Really stupid, Fox. Force Seth and the show to adopt HD (FINALLY!) and then don't even put money into making the home releases worthwhile.

Then again, the DVDs suck these days. Seth is too busy to do commentary. It's a joke.

I didnt even know Volume Ten came out on DVD because it only came out on DVD, and I only follow what's coming out on Blu-ray.

I totally get why the older seasons will most likely never be released on Bluray, but will Volume Ten or Eleven?

I mean, the new episodes are made and broadcast in HD now, right?
