I was thinking about this last night.
What is the Double-Dip Ratio (DDR)? It's simply a way to know how much you've double-dipped on Blu-ray. If you divide the number of titles you've double-dipped on, be it DVD to BD or BD to BD (like if a special edition came out) on the total number of BDs you own, what ratio do you get? For example, I have 55 movies on BD and out of those I've double-dipped on 12 (DVD to BD upgrade). 12/55 =~ 0,218 So yeah, the higher the number, the more you've double-dipped. I'm sorry if this is a worthless topic, but I still think it's a good way to know how many real "new" movies one has on BD. Last edited by Kynch; 01-20-2009 at 04:13 PM. |

Here is a question I've had. For years we've had 7.1 receivers. Many of us have invested in actually putting 7.1 speakers in our home theaters. Yet, movie after movie after movie gets released in 5.1 something or other.
When you talk about double dipping, I wonder if that will include double dipping your own blu ray collection to move from 5.1 to 7.1 or if the studios will simply one day start releasing everything in 7.1. There have been, as we all know, some really good movies put out with 7.1 and I can definately hear a difference when all speakers are firing, so why the *&*&^ can't studios release these movies in 7.1? 18/82 = 19.5%
Throw out the 4 Harry Potters and the 3 POTC's and its much lower. I hate to double dip and typically do not do so unless the PQ or movie is Epic/Scenic. For example I plan on upgrading LOTR because of the absolutely stunning landscapes. Movies like Gladiator, Braveheart etc which show huge battles would be upgraded as well. Never upgraded any comedy, dramas etc. |

I will admit that, even though I think my DVD's look great upconverted, and I swore that I would not double -dip....that I did for a few titles. Generally, I will only double dip if there is a great sale (ex: I picked up The Hunt for Red October and The Sum of All Fears for $12 each). As a general rule, I don't double dip unless there are some bangin' extras!!
And my double-dipped DVD's I am giving to my non-Blu-Ray family members. |

Luckily I do have one the few "Movie Stops" in the country near me and so I am have been taking all of my old DVDs that I have since converted to BD for trade in. Movie Stop does give a decent value on trade-ins so I have been able to flip the old DVDs into new Blu!

It really depends on what title it is - I have sold some DVD's that I either plan to buy shortly on Blu-Ray, or know they are coming on Blu-Ray soon. Once I see a release date for a movie i'd double dip on, I sell the DVD.

Not many double dips for me, I got a Reon HQV upconverter. My ratio is 0.0384615. I double-dipped on "The Lost Boys" because of the poor PQ on the DVD. I also double-dipped on Batman Begins, but that was an HD-DVD and probably don't count on your thread.
