I agree. But I like Armie Hammer, so I'm willing to give it a shot. The idea of Tom Wilkinson as the bad guy...That's never been done before. He's consistently good as the villain though, so I'm all for it.

I know Armie from Reaper but that's about it. I have no interest in the facebook movie. I'm hoping he'll show me something different here, but it's been a long damn time since Johnny Depp did anything good, so I'm more worried about him actually.

He's incredible in The Social Network. If you ever get a chance to check it out, or if you feel like it, the movie is definitely worth a watch. All the actors are fantastic in it.

As for Depp, I enjoy Depp in mostly everything. His roles haven't been nearly as good recently though, since he's been typecast so much as the strange quirky characters...Not a lot of breathing room...I wish he'd do more movies like Ed Wood, Finding Neverland, and Sleepy Hallow. But I know that won't happen...Hoping for the best with his role in this, though.

And because no Johnny Depp movie is complete without a Brit....

UK Actress Ruth Wilson In Talks For Female Lead
Quote:
Ruth Wilson is in negotiations to play the female lead in Disney's Lone Ranger, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced film that stars Armie Hammer as the Masked Man and Johnny Depp as Tonto. Details of her role are sketchy, but it is the female lead whose name is Rebecca. The film has a Dec. 21, 2012 release date. Gore Verbinski is directing. Wilson, a UK actress, had been in the mix for the role along with Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life) and Abbie Cornish (Limitless). She has had a standout TV career across the pond, starring in the acclaimed 2006 Masterpiece Theatre miniseries Jane Eyre (she was nominated for a Golden Globe) and most recently on the BBC's Luther opposite Idris Elba.

Dwight Yoakam, Helena Bonham Carter And More In Talks To Join The Lone Ranger!

Quote:
As well as the above two actors, Barry Pepper and James Badge Dale are also in talks to join the cast of the upcoming movie, and you can find more about which role they're up for here...

Variety report that Dwight Yoakam, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale and Helena Bonham Carter are all in talks to join The Lone Ranger. They'll join Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, Tom Wilkinson and Ruth Wilson in the Gore Verbinski movie from Disney. Here are some excerpts from the site, detailing the roles each of the actors are up for.

Yoakam would play Butch Cavendish, leader of the Cavendish gang and the pic's primary villain, while Pepper would play Captain J. Fuller, the leader of the seventh cavalry.

Dale, best known for starring in "The Pacific" for HBO and AMC's "Rubicon, would play Dan Reid, the Lone Ranger's older brother and leader of the Texas Rangers.

Carter, who is currently lensing Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows," at WB, is still in early discussions -- but if a deal closes, she would play the colorful madam of a local brothel.

The casting on Bonham Carter is absolutely spot on. I can totally see her stealing ever scene she's in as that character.

Oh because god forbid Johnny Depp does anything without his best friends troll wife....Uhhhhhhhhhhh

Perfectly happy with the casting of Barry and Dwight. I am a MASSIVE Dwight fan, seen him live more times then I can count and was born and bred on his honky tonk style. Love that guy!

Default Disney Pulls the Plug...for Now?

Quote:
Deadline is reporting that Disney has pulled the plug on The Lone Ranger, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced, Gore Verbinski-directed action western based on the classic TV show that was scheduled for release next Christmas. According to reports, the proposed budget came in north of $240 million and even when it was cut back, was still more than $230 million. With expensive films like John Carter and Oz The Great and Powerful already at various stages of production, and The Lone Ranger not yet shooting, Disney cancelled the film to save some bucks. There’s more after the jump.

There’s no word on where this leaves the project, which also had Armie Hammer attached as the lead character along side Depp’s Tonto, but according to Deadline “the studio and filmmakers are trying to figure out the next step, which would either be to shop it elsewhere or put it back together at a later date at a lower budget.”

This is a surprise because Depp and Bruckheimer, but Depp in particular, has been pure platinum for Disney. He’s made four incredibly successful (and incredibly expensive) Pirates of the Caribbean films with the studio and the latest one, On Stranger Tides, the most successful yet, grossing well over $1 billion internationally making it the #8 highest grossing film of all time. He also starred in Alice in Wonderland, another billion dollar bonanza.

Deadline’s story places the blame squarely on the shoulders of John Carter and Oz. Carter’s budget has, reportedly, ballooned over $300 million because of reshoots and Raimi’s Oz prequel is in the same range as Lone Ranger would have been – well north of $200 million.

Timing might have also be a culprit. The only major release for Disney in the coming months is the not-sure-thing The Muppets, followed by the even bigger gamble Carter in March. Plus, with Cars 2 considered a disappointment – at least at the box office – one tends to believe maybe there just wasn’t enough money rolling in for three (four if you count Brave) incredibly expensive films to all be in production at once, and only one coming out in theaters to off-set the cost. (There’s also The Lion King 3D to be fair.) Maybe they’ll just put the film on hold (it already had a release date, after all) until some more cash rolls in from productions that are already paid for.

Those are some ridiculously inflated budgets

So, let me get this straight - the "suits" obviously said CUT THE BUDGET! , & on a mega-budgeted $240M production, they come back with this possible exchange:
Production: "Well, we took some off and..."
Studio: (cutting them off) "How Much OFF?"
Production: "Well, we got it down to $230M now Boss! "

On a normal movie budget, saying $10M off would probably be greeted with, " "

When its that high, they probably got....well, no smiley needed, we KNOW what they got

I know!! Very good point & when I read that post, I too was like, "WTF are they doing to make it cost that much damn money??!!" Aside from possibly having to pay J. Depp a pretty substantial Salary
[Show spoiler]($20-40M , with the Low end only if he gets Major back-end "points", & the high-end based on his recent Disney successes)
, how the Hell is a Western movie about the Lone Ranger & Tonto going to cost that much unless it has Aliens invading their... Oh wait - that's been done!!!

Seriously, $240M for a Western? Does Gore Verbinski think he's directing DEPP in "Pirates 5" or what?

Here's the reason why this movie was going to cost so much (http://www.badassdigest.com/2011/08/...lves-obviously)

Quote:
Disney has set aside Jerry Bruckheimer’s big tentpole The Lone Ranger due to budget concerns; the film was looking to cost $250 million and director Gore Verbinski couldn’t get it down to 200. How the f**k, you may wonder (and we all have wondered), would a Lone Ranger movie cost that much? The franchise is about a masked man showing up and shooting bad guys, leaving behind a silver bullet as his calling card.

And that’s where the cost comes in. See, somebody – be it Bruckheimer, be it original screenwriters and patron saints of sh**ty blockbusters Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio – decided to put werewolves in the movie. You can see where this connection comes in, right? Silver bullets, werewolves.. of course!

The film, at least the 2009 draft before Justin Haythe came on, would be a very Pirates of the Caribbean style thing, with elements of Native American mysticism and the occult taking the forefront.

“It was never going to be a semi-traditional western…it was never going to be Zorro,” an insider tells Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere.

“It was going to be a Tonto show mainly. Tonto as the top dog and more dominant than the Lone Ranger. Tonto and the Indian spirits like Obi Wan Kenobi and the force. The driving engine was going to be Native American occult aspects worked in with werewolves and special effects. But flavored with doses of Native American spirituality in a serious way.”

The stuff about Tonto really gibes with what I’ve been hearing for YEARS, that this was a Green Hornet and Kato kind of relationship. The occult business makes sense when you look at the players involved. Skinwalkers and wendigos and all that stuff – this is what sells toys, not just bad guys in black hats.

The other interesting thing that Wells’ informant tells him is that Depp intended his Tonto to be the exact opposite of his Captain Jack Sparrow. “Depp’s interest in playing Tonto is about fulfilling his Marlon Brando legacy,” the director-writer believes. “Deep is partly Native American himself and he was partly mentored by Brando, who was a big Indians’ rights advocate. So he didn’t want to do any kind of jaunty performance that plays it light and spoofy with the Native American thing. No Captain Jack crap this time around.”

It’s possible that once the stink of Cowboys & Aliens is off the land Disney may try this one again, or maybe it’ll go into turnaround and another studio could pick it up. Paramount loves Verbinski after Rango, I’m sure. I sort of hope it just goes away; I’d love to see a more traditional Lone Ranger film, maybe one with a tie to the masked avenger tradition that created superheroes, but I don’t need the origin of the Lone Ranger’s silver bullets to be from lycanthropes.

I think a lot of Hollywood exce and producers and directors have lost touch with reality. I doubt any of them know how to make a movie that can be good and interesting with going over $200 millions

Actually, very few films this summer have a budget over $200 Million

Green Lantern and Cars 2 both hit $200 mill and Pirates 4 had a budget of $250 Mill, I think it might just be Disney with these kinds of sensibilities

Maybe so? I just find it funny that something like Lone Ranger would need to have a budget of 250 millions to be made, call me crazy I guess?
