The amateur ones just shoot out fire, not very long lasting and devastating.
This idea isn't new in gaming. I remember similar flamethrower from back in the Aliens vs Predator PC games.

I loved the flame thrower in Turok 2. It was the flaming water hose style, not the puff of fire style.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought KZ2 was supposed to feature a napalm gun, not a flame thrower. As I understand it, there is a considerable difference between the two, which would make IGN's complaint irrelevant. Again, unless I'm mistaken.
