They also failed to put a HD-DVD drive in the "elite" which came out a week ago perhaps they are losing faith in there own product. |

I don't see why there should even be two formats to begin with. Blu-ray has more support then HD does. I suppose that you ask the same question with VHS and beta, why the two formats? Blu-ray is clearly selling better then HD is and is more popular. We'll have to see how much longer this format war goes on.

You know, you lost me because your photo is so dark. I can't figure out what the background is. You say this is on your 360 box? I'm lost.
Please clarify??? |

If you're referring to the acceptance of the DVD forum of the HD DVD format... Well, I'll tell you something about the DVD forum and HD DVD. In 2003 and before, the format HD DVD was called AOD, or Advanced Optical Disc. It then was proposed to the DVD forum and got rejected. After some time, they just changed the name to HD DVD and the DVD forum approved the format. Then my question is: On what basis do they approve and disapprove? Anyway, the DVD forum is just a consortium of companies, like the Blu-ray Disc Association is now and shouldn't be granted more or less influence in whether one format will succeed and the other not. On topic: Sure is funny... This shows M$ will do anything for money. Even shoot themselves in the foot if they have to. ![]() Last edited by thunderhawk; 05-06-2007 at 06:11 PM. |

Blu-ray as a record and archive system has existed since 1995. Sony enlisted a group of disc and hardware manufacturers to build out the format to make it a consumer friendly HD format. Out of this formed the BDA which began with nine companies in 2002(that was a whole year before HD DVD was voted on by the DVD forum). By the time HD DVD was presented before the DVD forum, Blu-ray already had the support of Disney and Fox(Sony by default) and their smaller sub studios, and more than 100 CE manufacturers. HD DVD was approved on November 19, 2003 after initially being rejected by the DVD forum. Many in the DVD forum were already in the blu-ray camp rejected HD DVD because the DVD forum was formed to license, approve and create standards for the DVD platform, not for HD DVD. I know the studio I work for considered HD DVD a redundant format to the already established blu-ray format. After the initial rejection, Toshiba along with Warner pushed to change the rules so that HD DVD had a better chance against abstaining members. It was finally passed with a 5-4 win(hardly a overwhelming indorsement) with many abstentions from already BDA members. Both Toshiba and Warner stand to lose alot of royalties if the DVD format was to be supplanted by the BR format. Toshiba and Warner pushed VERY hard to get HD DVD format passed before a legit group, or there was no way it was going to see the light of day. So based on history HD DVD was NOT chosen to replace DVD, it was forced through by a studio and a manufacturer who stand to lose a royality stream they have enjoyed for ten years. Disney, Fox nor Sony(and quite a few more CE manufacturers) have ever endorsed HD DVD through the DVD forum, and I seriously doubt that they will unless blu-ray fails badly |

Let me say that I love the blu-ray format first. But I was just wondering why can't they(the two High def disc formats) live together in Harmony.....realy. I mean, there's not just one major game console on the market. There's not just one brand named didgital camera , cell phone , HD tv, motorcycle ,watch,or soft drink for that matter. This is in no way a knock against any and all things blu-ray, I just don't see why consumers should'nt have a choice . Comments please.

This is not to say that one is necceserily better that the other,it's just that being able to make a choice is important. Come'on think back to when EA bought the all of rights to the NFL that year(we all remember shitty that was). Now, granted , madden probably still would've been the number one foot ball game regardless but there's just something wrong about not having a choice. Lets get real, most of us (Including my self) have more than one dvd player in the house right? and I'm willing to bet that none of them are of the same name brand.Think about it . Every year The CES takes place , just imagine if there were only one product per consumer electronics company, the display would be mighty weak and no one would even bother.I think having a rival company is a good thing. One 'll be #1 and the other #2 that's all. Mcdonalds vs burger king. Coke vs Pepsi and so on and so on.

having a choice in this matter is good and bad.
On one hand it forces the companies exclusive to blu ray and vice versa to produce awesome transfers of their work to sell the product and make it look better then their competitors. On the other hand, its confusing to the majority of people that would have supported the format if there wasnt two out there. Most people wont go with a format that could be obsolete in a couple of years, and are going to wait until theres a clear cut winner before jumping in. and gamekid. bluray is better since its storage size is 30 gig higher for a dual layers disc. I leave studio support out of this convo since that technically isnt a hardware difference. |

I think the way that it'll work is that blu-ray will be number one since it is doing so well and HD will be second. We could have both formats stay around for several years before one dies out completely.
