I had my Sony S300 player for over one year without ever having problem playing a BD. Then on Black Friday 2008, I bought a Sony S350 player. Same thing. Plays flawlessly.

Some have tried to rationalize the OP's problem by suggesting static electricity, dust, or pet hair as being the culprit. Mine still ran flawlessly even though I had gotten zapped by static many times after touching S300's chassis. Yes, I suppose keeping the BD drawer open 24/7 would invite dust or pet hair into the holy of holies where the blue laser is, but is he that dumb? Well, I guess it's possible.

The OP's post clearly tells us what his intentions really are.

I got a 40g PS3 in Nov. of 2007 worked great until Jan of 2009. To be honest I didn't buy the warrenty, played games, blus, and DVDs on it. Left it out in the open for dust and a shit load of cat hair (5 cats). I thought about sending the PS3 to Sony to get fixed but after a month I said screw it and bought the BDP-350 for 299 at Target with the 3 year warrenty and have it it a cabinet with glass doors. Love this player plays everything. Took it right out of the box and played Boondock Saints without a problem.

I never had any defective Sony products. I did go through about 6 Samsung dvd players that didn't work right and Samsung didn't care. Thats the last time I ever bothered with Samsung or dvd. More Samsung products get returned to stores for malfuntions than any other brand

The question of there being defective Sony BD players is certainly valid. If I were in the market for a player, I would like to know what it's track record is especially in regard to being able to play every BD released.

Thus, I say it's good that people tell about their mishaps with their players but keeping within the framework of objectivity.

However, the manner in which the OP addressed the form is very distasteful and is obviously baiting a hook with false accusations to get people riled up against Sony.

I recommend banning the OP instead.

Default So-ny! So-ny! So-ny!

I have updated the firmware up to the point where I am today (1 update shy of being up-to-date) only because I wanted to, not because a disc would not play. I have NEVER had a problem with my BDP-S300, and when it finally ejects it's last BD, I will most likely buy whatever Sony's latest & greatest is!

the firmware thing is not an issue at all lol, i actually came across a few people's post irate about firmware etc.... when i was researching my BD's not being recognized by the player. i actually only had a problem with 1 or 2 blu-rays when the s300 was still working and the updates were already out i just wasn't aware of the newest update, and ten minutes later i was able to watch the flick. I am happy so many on this site seem to have no problems with playback, but my players problems were legit, and i know people here if you are movie fans have had players display "disc read error, no disc, cannot read disc" etc..... on many different brands high end, low end and in between, in my experience sony makes some quality products, i love my tv lol, but optical devices are not one of them.

What I don't understand is why some players load and play flawlessly without any firmware upgrades. Joe Consumer should at least expect that much.

I just got a Magnavox $200 BD player a week or so ago and it has done that no problem with anything I tried so far.

Yes, I whole-heartedly agree. This thread was started for his own gain -- nothing else.

That may be the most comical statement I've read on this board to date.

^^^ ass in training much, captain obvious much......

thats in reference to cutting corners that should not and would not have been cut, and were not cut in say i don't know the ps3. I was not talking a slightly less expensive material smart guy, i was speaking about vital components actually built for usage, so don't be a jackass

EDIT: BTW bout the time i vowed never to buy sony again, and long before blu-ray, i seem to remember a major change in the sony hierarchy due to the former serious LACK of quality control that was threatening what sony does best, name brand status

The S300 is actually a second generation machine.

I read of many people having issues with this particular model. I have the same, from the beginning with it, most frustrating when you put in a disc and it says 'can't play' or 'no disc'.. not all of them mind you,but some.and that's besides taking forever to load.Even after updating it twice in three months,so finally sent it to repairs. I was told this week the this player will be replaced by a new one, as the piece they need to fix it with,is not manufactured anymore. Still on warrenty, bought that only 5 months ago. So much for Sony.

I bought mine from SonyStyle one week after they were released. I play two or three movies per week, and the only failures I've had were due to firmware updates, which are a pain in the neck but not a big deal.

I replaced it yesterday with an S550, and will use the 300 on my secondary HT. It still works perfectly after almost two years.

The only problem I have is the lack of DTS-MA. That's it.

Judging the reliability of a product by reading forum postings is generally a dubious practice.

There will always be a group of people who have problems with the product in question. And it's pretty well impossible to gauge what percentage of customers this group represents unless the product is either exceptionally reliable or exceptionally unreliable.

A comparison to the 360 was brought up earlier in the thread. And this is a good example to contrast. There are actual researched reports from official sources which show the exceptional lack of reliability in the 360 product. And there are floods of commentary about 360's RROD failure all over every forum everywhere from both 360 fans and 360 haters. That's what an actual product with a chronic failure problem looks like.

I haven't seen any evidence to indicate that the reliability of Sony Blu-ray players is uncommonly low. And certainly, for the PS3 at least, the evidence points to higher than usual reliability in general.

There are some people who claim otherwise on forums. But that's expected and normal for any popular product, and there does not appear to be an exceptional number of complaints.
