As someone else already said, be sure to turn on the upscaling. It defaults to normal.

My thoughts exactly.

I wonder how the PS3 upscales though? If the PS3 doesn't have a scaler chip in it like the 360 then it must be doing it via software which would give an idea of how powerful the Cell really is.

for you 24p swt owners. 24hz is now active on the ps3!

There is also some white setting and RGB setting now. (don't know what they do)

Threw in gladiator DVD, man it looks alot better at 1080p upscale (never knew it was 755mbps dts!) "Save the bulls, honor Maximus!".

Also checked a few ps2 games they look good!

Watched a few minutes of BSG. PS3 seems to be a good upscaler. Good, now I can sell my standalone one. :P

I think that "normal" means "normal upscale".

Upscaled Gladiator and Zone of the Enders 2! I'm staying up late tonight.

The PS3 gives me good ideas.

Default 1.8 Will also play Blu-Ray movies in 720p

Firmware 1.8 will play Blu-Ray movies in 720p (so all in all total scaling capability from this update).

Blacker than Black and Whiter than White are now fixed too!

go to display and select RGB to Full. You may need to adjust your brightness.

Gladiator looks psuedo HD on my 50" 1080p DLP

I can see the difference between non-upscaled DVD's and upscaled DVD's, but I will still be slowing replacing my collection with Blu-Ray, Once you watch a movie in full 1080p, upscaling just kind of leaves you feeling like you are missing something.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad they added upscaling capabilities to PS3. Makes standard DVD look a helluva lot better.

correct it does....went through all the options and I would suggest to keep it on normal....when putting it on double lines, it doesnt fill up the screen and the picture box acutally becomes smaller (the whole picture is surrounded by black bars on all four sides), and the full screen makes the picture a lil bigger but couldnt really tell a difference between this and normal....normal wins out! LOTR looks sweeetttt!

That is awesome news. So the PS3 will now downscale to 720P and upscale to 720P, 1080I, and 1080P. So if this is true then the PS3 has a fully functional up and down scaling. People with very old HDTV displays will no longer have any issues.

No. I asked paidgeek in the insider's thread about this a couple of weeks ago. He said that SCE is not planning to add this. My display doesn't accept interlaced signals so that was an issue for me. But now that you can downscale to 720P it's a lot better than upscaling a downscaled 480P signal

Thanks Sony
