Covers may differ but content remains the same. Some covers, might be bilingual, they could either have English and Spanish or English and French. Many major Studios do that in order to cater to different people at the same time. If a cover has a SIGNIFICANT difference compared to the one you were expecting please contact us before you take any further action.

I really wish I saw this thread before ordering Eastern Promises from iNet (through Amazon). Just received yesterday, and it's the Alliance version, not Universal. The page had no indication of it being any different, and it was cheaper, so I went for it. Same ASIN # and everything.

Universal:
http://www.amazon.com/Eastern-Promises-Blu-ray/dp/B001EIOOWC?SubscriptionId=AKIAIY4YSQJMFDJATNBA&tag =bluray-022-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creative ASIN=B001EIOOWC&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Alliance:
http://www.amazon.com/Eastern-Promis...0938223&sr=1-3

Good news is I called Amazon, and the person I talked to was awesome. She matched the price on the Universal version and provided me a shipping label for returning my Alliance version.

Overall, not a huge deal, but slightly deceptive on iNet's part. If they're going to ship the Alliance/Canadian version, they better note that somewhere in the description. Good thing they have Amazon's customer service to bail them out.

amazon (US) actually, even has separate listings just for the Canadian releases in many if not most cases, so any marketplace seller, much less a major retailer like iNet, listing the Canadian version on the item page for the US version is even more unacceptable. Thankfully, amazon has great customer service just for these type of things.

I'm not knocking iNet. I've had nothing but good experiences buying from them as well. But, I've known they were a Canadian store long before they began selling through amazon. Kind of like how you have to know that Gohastings' amazon listings that say "previously viewed" mean ex-rental copy, even though they don't actually say that in the fairly generous character count amazon provides marketplace sellers to describe their item.

To me they look exactly the same. Why not just keep the Alliance version rather than go through all the hassle?

I did my research, though apparently it was not enough as I did receive a bilingual cover and emailed them, saying it didn't work. I got refunded and they let me keep the BD.

That was great customer service compared to some of the things I've read about them, however I will never order from them again.

From what I've gathered, Alliance doesn't have a great reputation around here. I've read a lot about bad transfers, etc from Alliance, and I didn't want to take the chance.

Plus it's just principle: what I got isn't what I ordered. However, if there wasn't a UPS store across the street from my house, I probably wouldn't have bothered.

Alliance can be hit or miss when there is no equivalent release in the US. However, if the US has a release then the Alliance version is the exact same version (disc) but with the Alliance logo slapped on the release.

That may be true for Warner titles released at the same time in the US and Canada, where Alliance is, more or less, just a distributor. But for titles released later in the states, like From Dusk Til Dawn, their are sometimes sizable differences: newer transfers, better audio, more supplements, etc.

One also has to factor in resell: if there's ever a better release that merits an upgrade, a Canadian disc will be harder to move in the US market, unless the Canadian release is, in some way, considered superior to the US edition.

That's true but in those cases the Alliance release was released usually long before their was an equivalent release in the US. If the discs are released simultaneously in the US and CA then they tend to be the same disc.

Let's take Mimic for example, Alliance released their own version about two years ago. However, once Lionsgate released a version in the US Alliance simply re-released Mimic in Canada. The newer release is the exact same disc as the Lionsgate release in the US sans slightly modified cover art, etc.

Isn't that what I said?

Alliance doesn't always update their former releases when a new one comes out in the US, so it's still unwise to assume they're always the same as the US release, when buying.

I was trying to clarify that this is limited to Alliance's unique releases which are few and far between. Also, Alliance distributes titles in Canada for more than just Warner Bros.

Alliance didn't update their From Dusk to Dawn blu-ray but I don't blame them considering EBHE released it in the States. I believe it's better to do quick research rather than assuming all Alliance releases are inferior releases.

In terms of Peteara's concern that Alliance's Eastern Promises release would be inferior to the US release, the Alliance release is the same disc as the Universal US release.

.

My only points are: it's always best to do your due diligence when importing and there are legitimate reasons why, even with all things being equal, the US version would be more desirable for someone who actually resides in the US, just as the Canadian version would be more desirable for someone in Canada.

I know the Alliance From Dusk Till Dawn has it's proponents, but from what I've read by those who have compared both, the EB edition has even more and appears to come from a newer master. Aside from crushed blacks, which have been reported to be consistent with more recent theatrical screenings of the film and thus debatably more accurate than the washed out, heavily over enhanced Alliance version, the overall picture quality in the EB version itself appears to be superior - cleaner and more vibrant - as strikingly unbelievable as that may be coming from EB, the abomination of the home video industry. I've only seen the EB edition myself, but all of the screenshots I've seen from the Alliance edition are far from persuasive. Even though the EB versions black crush is probably the most objectionable I've ever seen on DVD or BD, the few sequences that it actually poses a distraction, is far more tolerable to me than the prevalent EE evident in the Alliance release, which also appears to be some of the worst I've seen, on BD anyway. EE isn't as unsightly viewing at 50 inches as it is at 100 inches though.

Well, I received my replacement disc from Amazon, and what do you know, it's the Universal release!

Interestingly enough, I checked the link again to the Alliance version I received, and now instead of iNet, it's Netdealz.

It's showing iNetVideo for me but Amazon tends to rotate third party sellers.

If a blu ray is supposed to come with a slip are they usually good with including the slip? I've only bough Hesher from them and it wasn't released with one, thanks!
