I think many Spawn fans would agree that the 1997 release had a lot of potential with the characters and story, just didn't execute it very well.
I am afraid with his reference of the "Departed" it sounds like another South Boston/Scorsese style. I hope not. I want to see magic, Spawn pushed to the extreme.

The bigger budget option almost guarantees someone down the line will get cold feet and neuter it down to a PG-13.

Hopefully history won't repeat itself and we get a nasty, hard ass Spawn movie like the books.

Todd McFarlane Updates Us On 'Spawn'.

Quote:
It's been over ten years since we saw 'Spawn' on the big-screen, and when it arrived it came with mostly negative reviews from critics and fans, and we haven't seen the character return to theaters since.

It's nothing new that creator Todd McFarlane would love to see 'Spawn' brought back into the film world, and with the popularity of comic book movies going on right now, it's no surprise that he has 'Spawn' on his mind. McFarlane took the time to speak with MyDVDInsider and updates fans on the status of the film.

On the status of the script:

"I’m three quarters through it. I’ll finish it and put it on a shelf for about a week. What usually happens is, I come back to it so I can see all the flaws. I do a rewrite and there’s a first draft at that point. Then I’ll start soliciting comments from people I trust to see if I can get the script into working shape. If I can’t, I’m open to someone coming in and helping me with it."

Then he goes on to talk about wanting to direct the film himself:

"There’s only one way a studio is going to say yes, that’s if it’s a low-budget movie. To be honest, as a producer, even I wouldn’t hire myself to direct a big-budget film," he admits. "There are smarter people out there. But if you’re making it for $10 million to $12 million, you’re just going to go get some schmuck director so let me be the schmuck."

On the tone of the film:

"In this new version, there are no supervillains, archenemies or any of that. It’s just a spook movie, something scary going bump in the night. I think I can shoot that for almost next to nothing."

You know what? I don't even care what kind of Spawn movie he makes. Just for the love all that's holy either do something with it or don't. This guy has been stringing the return of Spawn for like, a decade or more.

I'd have rather he continue the HBO show-- I love that show, have the DVD set and revisit it from time to time. But it basically ends on cliffhanger and feels unfinished. Why not rerun the series on HBO and then produce more episodes?

I would personally love to see another Spawn movie make it to the big screen, but I am not shelling out any money to go see a movie about Spawn where you dont actually get to see Spawn. That just seems like a ridiculous idea to me.

Default Spawn Blu Ray

Currently, Amazon.com is selling a blu ray version of Spawn. Is this an import or a U.S. release? Does anyone know if Spawn was officially released on blu ray format? I find this odd as this forum doesn't have any information on a Spawn blu ray release.

I do believe it's the Alliance version from Canada. Should be region A though and I don't see any US version looking any better really.

There is no official US version. There is Canadian version. But that is stripped of all extras and I heard it has horrendous picture and audio quality.

Writer Todd McFarlane offers an update on the planned Spawn reboot, revealing that an Academy Award-winning actor is attached. He also says that a new animates series based on the Image Comics character is in development.

Speaking with MTV Geek at Toy Fair, writer Todd McFarlane offers an update on the next Spawn film. A sequel to the critically panned 1997 film was in the works, but in 2009, it was reported that McFarlane was working on a stand-alone script which would be completely different from the original. Now, he says that he's still working on the script, and he reveals that an Oscar-winning actor is on board (though he won't say who). "I continue writing pages here and there. I have a guy waiting in the sidelines, an Academy Award-winning actor. Every three weeks he's on the phone going, 'Todd, where's the script? Todd, where's the script?' I can't say who it is. You could [narrow it down].

"He came out to the office. He gave me his pitch, and I gave him mine," he added. "The pitch I gave was that we could do ten of these for the next ten years and he wouldn't have to be 22 for the rest of his life." Additionally, McFarlane stated that a new Spawn animated series is in the works, saying that they're now able to do things that weren't able to be done on the HBO series which ran 1997-1999. "We have 90 minutes all set and ready to go, other than sending it to an animation house. We've done all the voice recordings, we've done all the backgrounds, so the technology is way better than it was a decade ago; there are some spectacular things we can do now that we weren't able to when we were on HBO."

Which Academy Award-winning actor do you think is attached to the new Spawn movie? Do you plan on seeing that and/or the upcoming animated series?

Yeah I have been waiting forever to see this character done right. Dark seems to be in now so this could really work. I loved the cartoon, hopefully a new series gets the older one on Bluray!

I just hope this Spawn has a cape. I loved the comics early on but for some reason stopped reading.

The cape was one of the few things the '97 movie did right.

Apart from the atrocious 90's CGI in the Hell scenes, that movie was more a product of its time--Spawn was just becoming popular in the comics, but comic-book movies had gotten into a rut with the Batman sequels, Marvel Films didn't exist yet to set standards, New Line was looking for their next Ninja Turtles, and no one knew where the next great comic-film discovery would come from, except to do what worked for the Turtles and Dark Horse Films, and make marketing deals for the New Guys.
Was just looking up the trailer last night out of curiosity--Can't remember whether on the whole, the 90's Spawn was bad-bad, or just Daredevil/Ghost Rider "Oh, that's who that guy is! " mediocre, where you overlook the movie's faults just to get caught up on the Comic LIteracy 101 origins.

Just give me a sequel to the original film. There's zero reason for a reboot or for the new film to be "intellectual". Spawn is Spawn and I want to see him kick ass in R-Rated glory!
