Just looked him up at IMDB and he's 6'3", so that's good. Now he needs to hire a trainer and start downing the pasta. he needs a good 40lbs. of extra bulk to really look the part.

I really, REALLY hope so. Thor is one of my faves, I really like the way the Avengers cartoon movie portrayed him too. I'm hoping they go that route instead of the "Odinspeak/I say thee nay!" path. Either way, I'm just excited as hell to see Mjolnir ruining everyones shit. Just let the kid put on some muscle and I think he could be a great Thor.

I have no knowledge of the Thor comics but as far as the Mythos goes Thor was a complete badass, and I'm really hoping they follow his true mythos much closer than I'm sure the comics ever did.

I got no clue if I even care about this movie at this point (I have zero history with Thor), but after watching him at the outset of Star Trek I'll consider this positive news. Beats the heck out of some wrestler being chosen for the part.

Yeah I am very big into Viking mythology and their pagan gods and such, so I used to read a lot about Thor, but as far as the comic which is their source material here I have zero knowledge if they are even remotely related.

This was a conversation that went on in an older Thor thread. Hope this helps (Thanks to Blu As Hell and Logan)

EXCLUSIVE MONDAY UPDATE:I've learned that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Thor director Kenneth Branagh have cast their Loki, the nemesis to the lead in Thor set for release on May 20, 2011. He's Tom Hiddleston, unknown to American audiences but an award-winning British actor and Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts (RADA) graduate. He played Winston Churchill's son in HBO's The Gathering Storm, but, more to the point, note that Hiddleston starred in Ivanov opposite Sir Kenneth on the London stage and also starred with him in the BBC miniseries Wallander. Marvel Studios won't confirm my news, but Hiddleston had been considered as a possible Thor. See my previous, 'Thor': Unknowns? There had been a big Internet push to cast Josh Hartnett in the Loki role but instead Marvel went with an unknown. This follows my news of the weekend casting of 25-year-old Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth as Thor since Branagh was in town to finalize the principal cast. See my previous, EXCLUSIVE: Chris Hemsworth Is 'Thor'.

I hear the Marvel Studios press release about both castings is being written and should be released soon. Chris Hemsworth also a virtual unknown to American audiences, yet he was approved to play the lead role in Thor by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the film's director Kenneth Branagh. Hemsworth can currently be seen as "George Kirk" in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot and also just snagged the lead in Red Dawn for United Artists last Thursday. (He's currently filming Joss Whedon's horror flick Cabin In The Woods for UA, and I heard the studio was so hot on him that's why it cast Hemsworth in the action pic.) The 25-year-old hunk played "Kim Hyde" on 171 episodes of Home and Away, the successful Oz TV series where Heath Ledger started. The way Chris Hemsworth got the part of Thor is one of those great Hollywood stories that happens only once in a blue moon. I have all the details here.

a little disappointed to learn Marvel's playing their winning hand so soon and using Loki as the main villian in the first movie. I figured it would make more sense to have Thor fight the Destroyer armor, or Ulik the Troll, and setup Loki for the sequel. Kinda like how Nolan used a lesser known villian for BB (Scarecrow, Ras) and saved his ace for TDK.

Who knows at this point? Loki could be behind the scenes so to speak. Let's wait for more casting news. If it's the origin of Thor, then they'd have to cast Loki.

Um...not so sure about this. I think Loki was casted well, but I cannot see Hemsworth as Thor. Only time will tell I guess. And I hope that I am wrong about Hemsworth. Even so, Thor is one of my least favorite MARVEL characters, so I could really care less if this movie tanks. The only thing I hope it wouldn't affect would be the Avengers movie.

I already have the teaser poster in my head.

a dark background, with Mjolnir laying on cracked concrete, and a closeup of the inscription on the hammer. How cool would that be?

Marvel may be more interested in setting up the Avengers with Thor, the same way that they did with The Incredible Hulk, than in saving good characters for sequels.

It's interesting you say that. That's how I felt/feel about Iron Man. I still can't read his stories in the comics (one of my least favorite heroes) but I love the movie incarnation. I wonder if Thor will be the same for others. I never really followed him in the comics. Was never that interested but never really disliked him.

Having said that, I think Kevin Feige has been a genius thus far in creating the Marvel Universe onscreen (at least the one's he has control over).

The post you quoted I posted the day before the Loki announcement. I just added that announcement to this existing thread to not clutter the forum (and we changed the title)
