The 2011 remasters that Studio Canal put out in Europe (don't think they were ever released in the States) were poorly framed to the point where you saw parts of the negative you aren't supposed to see, highlighting camera rigging for example.

Nice catch. IIRC the BDs are based on the same new 4K masters as on the UHDs, so I'd imagine any print wear and such to be the same between them. That is if the video they used for those trailers are indicative of the new BDs I guess.

Judging by those German trailers, they've got the framing right this time, but much like the 2011 masters, the gun flash at 0.34 (when Teasle knocks the rifle out of Galt's line of fire) in the First Blood trailer is invisible for some reason.
I shouldn't complain, as on the whole, these look like a radical improvement on all previous releases. I'll probably get the German trilogy steelbook, as the U.K disc of Rambo III is likely cut for the horsefall. Last edited by indisposed; 11-07-2018 at 02:27 PM. |

Be careful there, usually the German disc is the same as the UK disc when it comes to Studio Canal so highly likely the cuts will be on both in which case the US Lionsgate will be the preferred choice for III.
Just checked all three myself side by side against the 2011 masters (all three were framed off-axis too far to left) and like you said all three appear to have the framing issues fixed, excellent. Really can't wait to get these. Along with all the Carpenter remasters either with bluray or uhd, Jack Ryan remasters, MI remaster (despite some iffy color timing choices), Die Hard remaster, Deer Hunter remaster, Candyman Uncut remaster and a host of others this is turning out to be my favorite year for releases. Any idea if the Lionsgate discs are region locked? |
