I actually think her plainness works to her advantage in The Shining. It makes her more vulnerable as opposed to a sex goddess, as sexual confidence makes a person appear stronger, more self-assured.

I think it's stupid that most studios these days always have to cast the most attractive leads they can find so that the audience can go to the movies just to fill up their spank banks.

The world is mostly made up of regular folks.

I've always liked how the horror genre traditionally handled the issue: If you're hot, you are cardboard prop that's gonna die.

That's what I like about Kubrick films. Average characters aren't played by super models.

Agreed. Most everyone in his flicks falls somewhere in the middle when it comes to their looks. They look like real people. Spielberg's movies often have a similar philosophy.

LOL..... I'm talking about Shelly Duval. How funny. Yes, it would be insulting.

And yes back on topic for me too. I "personally" think this is the greatest horror movie of all time.

That is why it is said that beauty is on the eye of the beholder. To me that woman is pretty yes, not stunning or the "most beautiful woman in the world"

Back on topic: Yes, Shining is one of the greatest suspense/horror movies ever.

I'm sorry, but we cannot get back to topic until we ALL can agree on who the prettiest woman in the world is.

Oh wait! That might be impossible because it's subjective. Yeah, ok. We can get back on topic now. Let's talk about The Shining.

I think the question isn't so much "Is The Shining any good" but "which version is the better one".

If you haven't seen the shorter European version, I recommend it. It's much better paced and tense than the US cut.

Since I love the movie so much, I bought both versions. Just used a viva elite with 2 disc slots and had one of the paper covers face inwards, like inside artwork.

But as far as your question goes, I think I might lean a little towards the non-U.S. version. I like some extra parts added in the U.S. version, like the extended job interview in the beginning that gives a better idea how isolated the Overlook really is. Plus I like the longer tour of the Overlook Ullman gives. I also like the extended first conversation between Jack and Lloyd the bartender.

Other parts of the U.S. version I felt were HORRIBLE and/or corny. The first that comes to mind is Wendy coming to the room of skeletons at the end of the movie. That stock cliche horror effect was more suitable in some ancient 1930s primitive horror movie than a Kubrick psychological horror masterpiece that is The Shining. So much worse than Wendy's other three encounters with the horrors of the Overlook. Another part I felt was extremely corny is Wendy talking to herself and saying what her plans are. It felt so forced because of the fact that she didn't have anyone to talk to for her to speak what's on her mind at loud for the audience. Jack saying to himself outloud "I'd sell my soul for a glass of beer" could just cut it because it felt a lot more natural. Wendy's talk did not. I could also live without the doctor's visit to Danny in the beginning and the extended trip of Dick Hallorann to the Overlook.

Another part I did not like about the U.S. version is learning that the Torrances had several TVs in the Overlook. Before seeing the U.S. version, I always thought that they did not have television in the hotel, and that made the non-U.S. version feel much more claustrophobic. And it really feels more claustrophobic. It cuts off the entire dialogues of several characters (the doctor, Ullmann's partner Bill Watson, and the guy Hallorann is talking to on the telephone on his trip to the Overlook).

Overall, it's good to own both versions I feel. But if I had to pick one, I would probably go with the non-U.S. version because those couple of corny scenes from the U.S. version really annoy me.

I'm so on the other side of the fence on this U.S. vs. UK cut thing, I can no longer even speak rationally about it. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a room with people all arguing that Lysol clearly tastes better than chocolate milk. The UK cut of THE SHINING is an abomination in my book that short-changes the material and feel like a riff on Kubrick, rather than the real McCoy. To each their own but, really, blech. I am so confounded that this remains a point of contention.

Yes, but then someone will outbid me and bid up to $20. I gave up on Ebay. Stupid bidders jack up the price like crazy.

Search for "Buy it Now" only option. I found one brand new for only US $6.98. Have a look:
