I've still got my fingers crossed for the upcoming JP set. Dune is one of the few titles I would really splurge on to get additional extras and the extended cut in proper HD.

Yep, this one here: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dune-Blu-ray/129143/

If it has the extended cut and looks like the U.S. theatrical cut in terms of PQ then I am definitely importing it.

The extended edition is really such a mess of compiled footage that was just thrown together. The most insulting with when they try to pass off one of the Harkonen ships as a different by flopping previous same footage.
Not to mention there is still so much more not included.

In the interview with Raffaella she lies about the existence of a longer version. I knew the an exec at Universal at the time and he sent me B&Ws showing what was cut. He saw a much longer cut by Lynch before it was re-cut for theatrical release.

It's a shame that Lynch has given up on the film it could really use his input and over seeing in a restoration. Not to mention the horrible tinting that has appeared over the desert sequences on BD. It was never orange in the theater.

Yeah, I hate the repeated sequences as well, but there's so much I like such as Gurney playing the balliset, more footage of Duncan, and Paul's fight with Jamis.

Lynch won't touch it with a 10 ft. pole it seems.

Looks really cool. That purchase price is around fifty bucks, anyone know how much shipping from Japan usually runs?

Not much if you order from Amazon.jp or CDJapan. I imagine the price will drop too.

It's nice to see some new and professional-looking artwork for this. I've never seen any of these photos before (2 Blu-ray covers, plus the outer box cover).

I'd love to see Lynch's longer cut of Dune get released on home video, it'd be great if he changes his mind and does a director's cut for Universal. It's not as if DUNE has been given a half-dozen home video releases in the last ten years, a new blu-ray release that heralded a Lynch director's cut would surely sell.

So I'm not the only Dune junkie!

This Japanese release looks interesting can't wait to find out more. This is one of the only movies I would dish cabbage out to double/triple/quadruple dip if the quality & runtime are better!

I will say my HD DVD extended version is pretty darn good.

I'm really hoping the Japanese release turns out nice. I'm curious to hear if the color timing will be closer to the theatrical release as opposed to what we have now on blu-ray in the US. I'm especially interested to hear how the extended version looks. I hope they do it right. This film is kind of all over the place, and the extended version even more so, but I still enjoy it very much. The production design is amazing.

TO be honest it needs to be re-edited from the ground up and new SFX to be created to fill in the gaps, there's a fantastic film in there dying to come out it just needs work.

The footage it all there i feel, just needs some love to bring it all together. Hasn't anyone done a kind of HD re-edit that gave it a shot

Heck we have some talented people do personal ones for Superman, Start Wars and Star Trek, they even created brand new effects!

There are some solid fan edits out there using the main film, bits of the Smithee cut as well as pieces from deleted scenes etc. The "Spicediver" edit is great, though obviously not getting an official, HD, release any time soon.

That all said I love the cover art for this JP version. If it ever drops to a decent price i may grab it.

What's wrong with the colour timing?

It's never been made available on VHS, LD, or DVD so don't get your hopes up.

There are no color timing issues on the U.S. theatrical BD. I can tell you that much.

I did a direct comparison between the HD DVD and BD a few years ago and the PQ is virtually identical. Where the BD really shines is the lossless audio as the highs and lows of Toto's soundtrack really kick @ss.

What are the chances of the extended cut being on a Blu Ray disc? At the prices that they are charging for this new set, I will be disappointed if the extended cut is just a dvd. Either way I've got my fingers crossed for a new transfer of the theatrical cut.
