I've been told that a lot of the dinosaurs died during the making of the first movie, so now it's impossible to properly remaster it. They actually had to corral some of the dinosaurs from The Lost World to make the 3D version, but if you close one eye while watching it, you can clearly see the difference. Spielberg talks in great detail about it on the commentary track.

AHA had a watchful eye and made sure that no dinosaurs were harmed during the filming of JP.

On the other hand, Joseph Mazzello's balls fried to a crisp when they turned the power back on.

Guys, Jurassic Park came out in 1993. Everything was on VHS in those days. For it to be even in HD, they’d have to reshoot the whole movie with modern cameras.

There are people who unironically believe that. "Why are you buying old movies in 4K, do you really think they had 4K cameras and technology back then?".

They had and it's called 35mm film.

I once saw someone say blu rays and 4ks are a sham because they make poor special effects more obvious.

I remember years back someone claiming HD was 'too sharp' and hurting his eyes so he would just stick with DVD.

2. At least the rumor is more believable and less irritating than all that "insider sources" madness that inspired arguably the most phallic post of my career.

I really hope the neg exists, and that it can be properly restored, because what's on the current 4Ks is an insult to the fans of JP and the film itself. It looks like an upscaled DVD, and that's pretty tragic considering it's one of the greatest films ever. It's one of the last CGI films made before CGI really took over. Back in ye olden dayes of CGI, you actually had to make it good, and so it was rarely used. That's how we got films like JP, T2, Men In Black, Titanic, and The Matrix, where we were truly blown away by what we were seeing. Then CGI just became a given, and the quality went way down.

I'm giving Uni and Spielberg the benefit of the doubt, and if this is remastered then it's an easy Day One for me.

Absolutely. 4K or greater scan of the IP (if it's timed right, done on good stock, and stored properly, it should literally be perfect), careful restoration, careful mastering, DV and HDR if possible, legendary SDR if not, and drop it on a BD-100 with that OG 5.1 track.

It would still smoke the coaster that's out now.

Most of what was lost in the fire was music masters, and even then a lot of what was lost isn't truly gone. I've talked to producers who said the "master" UMG lost was actually a copy of the master, and the producer kept the original master. Jurassic Park definitely has multiple copies of the negative. I am also positive the whole lost negatives thing is a false rumor.

I could be completely wrong by saying this but my guess is that for the 2013 3D conversion they had a 4K scan done, the 2011 bluray was a lower quality scan, and Universal is just too lazy and too cheap to rescan the negative, so they went with the 2D version of the scan meant for the 3D version. (Kind of like what happened with T2, and Star Wars 1, 4, 5, and 6.

99% of the stuff Universal and UMG does is because their too lazy and cheap. UMG and Universal are the worst studio/record label to exist. They continuously screw crap up. I've been begging UMG to remaster albums in 24bit and they aren't because remastering takes time and money that they don't want to commit. They did finally remaster Godsmack's discography in 24bit (It really needed it), but I was harassing, I mean begging them about it all the way back in 2019.

IMO the only way we get a proper remaster of this film is if people were to constantly flood Universal's email about it.

Are you sure it wasn't a meteor that wiped out the Jurassic Park negative? That's what Tim Murphy told me

I can't say much about the Universal fire, other than I had heard that some film materials were lost and a lot of music masters are indeed lost due to that incident.

As in the multitrack masters, not just the final mix masters, and many original MT masters are going for the UMG catalog.

I know of one album in particular that is indeed the case, the MTs are gone due to the fire.

I can't speak on the older masters of JP, or the post-2011 masters of the Star Wars movies (other than they got edited again...again). With T2 though, that was an intentional creative decision by James Cameron to use the 3D file as the starting point for the 4K. It's only reason 8,000,005 why that 4K is as royally screwed up as it is.

Back in 1993 they used real dinosaurs in the movie. They didn't make a Jurassic movie for 14 years after JPIII once PETA stepped in. I heard they confiscated all of the OCN's and Spielberg said he would never direct another Jurassic movie.

Jurassic World was finally greenlit once they could go full CGI. Crazy man, crazy.

Kind of a bummer, but it's funny Universal didn't bother to make new discs for these even if just to add Atmos, because they're advertising Atmos as a selling point and it implies for the whole trilogy.

Maybe his TV had oversharpening dialed to max, which will make the image look harsh, especially when there is film grain.

I'm not sure that guy there should have raised the LFE up for the theatrical version there by 3dB.
Didn't DTS originally assume that the subs would be set to a lower volume than today so didn't they mix 3dB too hot for today's speaker settings?
