The Heat shootout was originally supposed to be a reference-grade surround sound showcase, but Mann realized that the sound stems they had for gunshots were nowhere near as powerful as the sound recording during the production of the scene, due to the fact that the bullets were full-load blanks (that means with all the power of a real bullet, just no projectile) and the reverb from the surrounding buildings gave it a flavor that a synthetic sound-effect couldn't do at the time, so he went with the recorded audio from the on-set recorders.

Saw the 4K DCP in cinemas and the sound blew my head off in this scene, loudest moment of any film I’ve ever seen in cinemas, absolutely incredible |

the combination of the two is why that particular shoot out is outstanding still nearly 30 years later. the only thing that even comes close in my opinion is the dark knight. also no country for old men. Narc was also pretty good i thought. maybe there is a more recent movie that stacks up .. so many war movies recently and in those the quality often gets lost with the quantity so you miss the overall dynamic of having just a couple of really well done major shootouts across an entire movie I would say Heat can sound good in atmos as long as they keep it simple. i don't know much about the format tbh so I could be talking rubbish but it seems easier to separate vertically than it would be front-behind since you can be more subtle. anyway lets see, probably they'll screw it up somehow ! hope not though |

I have seen the UHD streaming version. Very disappointed when compared to the old Blu Ray. Colors just seem way off and HDR barely is there. If this UHD disc release isn't a complete 180 I will be furious.

Which old Blu-ray? Cause the primaries on the definitive one are way off. At least that's what I suspect.

I saw somebody changed the disc number to three, so - has it been confirmed that the UHD release will retain the bonus disc from the Director's Definitive Edition Blu-ray?

Someone can correct me but doesn't Lucas still own all the negatives and he has final say in how it is to be done?
So if that is true, even if Disney wanted to fix it, Lucas can go nope. This isn't how it is done and you can't do it this way. |

It's likely Lucas has approval over new transfers of the movies he made. It's fairly common for big name filmmakers. Like how Spielberg always seems to be approving a new transfer of one his movies every few years or how James Cameron's movies are in limbo because he's too busy to approve transfers. Filmmakers are usually brought on board and consulted for new restorations/remasters even if there's no legal reason. Considering what a control freak Lucas is, I'd be surprised if they did anything new with the OT/PT without his approval. The new 4K releases are from the last round of transfers he supervised in 2012. Might have been laziness on Disney's part, but it's also the last version Lucas signed off on. It's often been cited how they needed his personal approval to show the original version of Star Wars at a 2019 Academy screening. We don't really know the terms of Lucas selling off Star Wars to Disney. And even if there isn't something legally binding, they will probably want his involvement even as a formality. They still ask him to consult the new writers/directors of the Disney Star Wars films and he'll occasionally drop by the sets and they screen the movies for him. So it's not like he wants nothing to do with Star Wars.

Couldn’t disagree more with this statement, respectfully. Love them or hate them the PT at least tried to do something new and had a clear direction with it’s narrative. It had all of Lucas’s trademark touches with the story parallels, brilliant ship designs and compelling world building. All of which were absent in the sequel trilogy which simply recycled what came before it and failed to develop it’s new characters in a natural way. Kids who grew up SW fans with the Prequels love them the same way most of us loved the OT. Kids who are growing up in the Disney era of SW films love The Mandalorian and have largely forgotten the sequel trilogy already.
