There's nothing wrong with the U.S. BD for the theatrical cut. The only way it could look better is with a 4K scan.

Are there any screen caps of either Frank Herbert's Dune or Children of Dune blu-rays from across the pond?

From what I've seen the timing is fine except in the desert sequences. There was never an orange tint to those scenes - in the theater or on the first Beta/VHS and Laserdisc releases.
Another sloppy thing about the TV re-edited edition is that the "blue" eyes come and go in different scenes. |

Not sure if there was more than one release, but this one is nearly 3 hrs long. The quality of the PQ and the audio is great. I have all of the releases, but don't bother getting the 3D version. It is flat as a pancake.

The US has clearly superior PQ despite being the older blu-ray. The UK one has a nice slipcover - thats about the only good thing I can say about it. The US also had a higher audio bitrate as I remember. The UK did have different extras though. If you are in the UK dont worry about ordering the US one - its region-free and its usually very cheap too. |

![]() I'll get the US one ordered. I have a multi-region BR player anyway so it wouldn't be a problem. Thanks again! |

Typically, I watch my blus on the big screen and no way to take screenshots unless I use cam, but too lazy to do that. The only time I watch any kind of video on any of the PCs is from FaceBook. So the chances of getting any snapshots of the extended version is nill.

The Amazon.de description, in a fractured Google translation:
The 2-disc Blu-ray release includes the original theatrical version of a new image Master in English DTS-HD MA 5.1 with the original cinema Synchro DTS-HD MA 2.0 and the extended TV version that the whole, available HD material in English DTS-HD MA 5.1 and German DTS-HD MA 2.0. happening. The upscaling of the missing scenes was done with a professional upscaler. This worldwide unique version of the highest quality is therefore the longest version of all time and the uncut original aspect ratio 2.35: 1 In addition, there is next to a turning cover without FSK labeling also exciting extras such as "deleted scenes", "Designing Dune", " Dune FX "Dune models", "Dune wardrobe" and also an extensive photo gallery. |

Just got the 2-disc German edition -- very, very happy from what I've sampled so far. And despite the packaging claims, it's region free too!
The 187-min TV cut is in 2.35, 5.1 DTS MA, 1080p AVC encode. The added TV scenes are very well upscaled; nicely integrated and it's not as if they're horrible looking. Just they are not quite as detailed as the rest of the transfer, which is as good as the "genuine" HD theatrical cut presentation. I'd say this is generally the same presentation as the 2.35 TV version that was on the US Dune 2-disc DVD, except it's a little bit longer by about 30 seconds or so, and the theatrical cut material is genuine HD. Someone who knows this inside and out will be able to tell if there's anything different, but the prologue, "Alan Smithee" credits, etc. are all there. Whoever produced this didn't just slap it together and it looks good. The theatrical cut Blu-Ray is AVC encoded, 5.1 DTS MA. Seems to be very similar to the US Blu-Ray transfer, just with AVC encoding instead of VC-1. This is a plus as I found the prior European Blu-Ray to be too bright. High bit rate (high 30s, ocassionally low 40s mbps) in line with the US release. Extras are the trailer (not on the US Blu-Ray) and the deleted scenes from the US Blu-Ray, minus Rafalla DeLaurentiis introduction. Nothing else. Removable German subs of course. Much cheaper than the upcoming Japanese set and the presentation of the TV version is excellent. Unless they manage to get all the footage in HD (which I wouldnt hold my breath on) I'd say this is as good as we'll probably get for the TV version. So for the moment anyway I'd say this is my fave Blu Ray of Dune to date ![]() Last edited by DMRI2006; 05-29-2015 at 09:58 PM. |
