NP. Do bear in mind Ill be taking these shots with my Samsung S23. I've just checked my itunes/MA copy, its still outputting in HD only. The Doly Atmos logo is not popping up. The iTunes link states its updated to DV/DA. However, my copy isn't. Ill take pics from the 4k disc and possibly the £1 PAL VHS

Have to say I’ve just taken a quick look at what’s clearly the new version of JP1 on my iTunes copy - but in HD - and can immediately tell it looks way better than we were expecting.

I know it was just a quick look, but did you or can you compare the same scene(s) to the prior version?

Any particular shots you’d like me to look at?

Really really wish they released this separately. Hate that I'm gonna have to get the two steelbooks just to get the better discs.

I think u quoted the Italian 4k regular editions having Avatar and Avatar 2 4K in DV discs if I'm not wrong. Probably Amazon Italy might come up with the regular DV 4ks in the future.

I'm starting to wonder if there is the possibility that Universal would "redo" the masters of the Hitchcock movies from the first 4K boxset. Why? Not just because the discs don't have Dolby Vision, but because they are HDR10+ on streaming. The other volumes also don't have Dolby Vision on disc, but they have it on streaming. And when one also considers that the first volume has by far the most iconic Hitchcock films that Universal owns (Read Window, Vertigo, Psycho and The Birds, three of these are among the four most popular Hitchcock films, period, only missing North By Northwest, which Warner owns), I'm starting to think there's a real possibility that someday, even if it takes many years, it will get a release with Dolby Vision and maybe some tweaks to the HDR gradings too if Universal wants that.

Back to the Future is another universal film series which its initial 4K offering is merely ok. It could look so much better than it currently does.

I think he's confused/mistaken - in plenty ways. I think he's refering to Divisa's reissues of Avatar 1 and 2 in standard 4K form, just with the DV disc. I reported about that. But it's still confusing because that's Disney, not Universal. Universal is just barely starting with these type of reissues and we don't know how far they're gonna go with them just yet.

I own some of the discs (not all, but half) and I think they're actually pretty good discs, unless someone can prove me wrong. It'd be nice to have Dolby Vision, as a total Dolby Vision shill, but I'd honestly save these type of double dip reissues to 4Ks that really need fixing, in form of better master or comprpession, things like these. As I said before Universal only just dipped their toes with this one (and Shaun of the Dead) they're testing the waters, so to speak. We should not expect them to suddenly reissue a lot of discs with these 'updates'.

Did a quick compare and the color grading is definitely more pleasing. Don't expect anything drastic like the sheer warmth of the 3D version but magenta coloring is gone. I can't comment on DNR and detail as it's a 1080p version compressed in a browser but there is positives to this release. Wether its worth $60 is entirely up to you

We live in the "Arrow's Inglourious Basterds looks totally different from Universal's" era, I won't believe the new (?) JP is indeed new until I see at least some screenshots.

The transfers in Hitchcock's first volume are indeed very good, same for the encoding. And I agree that there are titles that would certainly need much more a new disc (Scarface comes to mind, the transfer is very good, but the encoding struggles in the busiest scenes). I agree that Universal is only starting to dip their toes into adding Dolby Vision to older 4K masters and making new discs for them, hence why I don't think that we should expect a new release of the Hitchcock Volume 1 4K titles in Dolby Vision anytime soon (hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it only happens next decade). That said, I think we'll slowly see more and more of these Dolby Vision remasters from Universal. There are only so many times you can re-release the same disc in a different packaging if you want to keep selling and earning money from that title in physical media, especially with physical media being as niche as it is.

Okay so Jurassic Park has been updated to Dolby Vision/Atmos on my ITunes, so I checked it against the disc.

It’s not a drastic difference, but it is noticeable. Somebody else will have to dig in and explain the alterations better than I can, but in the opening scene with Grant; the sky is actually blue, where on disc it’s more of a brown color. Also the blue cast during night scenes with the T Rex and Nedry being lost are a much more vibrant blue, a bit more on the teal side (sorry Mike!)

I don’t think this is the radical regrade to match the original prints people were hoping for, but it does look better in a lot of scenes I compared (and some scenes looked pretty similar to me as well.)

That would explain what I was seeing— looks like they dialed out the magenta push of the old transfer, and it is noticeable and looks better in a lot of the footage I briefly compared.

I would so, honestly. I totally would love an scenario where majors start to edit their own titles in a similar way to boutique labels (in their own way) and reissuing discs with new improved encodes, fixes, extras, Dolby Vision support, etc, rather than just the same old disc sold 3000 times.

I've noticed this trend, Lionsgate is doing it (though they're doing it the same way Sony or others do, limited expensive editions, no standards..).. Universal is starting to do it (so far, Shaun of the Dead and JP; we'll have to see if they do it more).. I don't recall if others are doing it. Warner is also putting out more ''original mixes''.. Universal has added DV, better encode, master fixes, but it'd be nice if they started adding original mixes in lossless too. Jurassics offer lovely Atmos mixes, but none of the original stereo or 5.1 mixes.

I mean, do I hate double dipping? Yes. Specially. But I hate it even less if they bother to add lots of improvements and incentives - so long as there's not already a almost definitive version out there, and the new additions isn't just an extra or two more.
