I miss the good old day's of relying more on physical fx instead of just straight for CGI.
I had a similar mindset a while back, as CGI began to assume a greater role in special effects than more traditional means. Frankly, I still believe that a well-orchestrated stunt work sequence or something fabricated in a workshop can be more impressive than anything drawn on a pen tablet, but I've resigned myself to the fact that there are physical and budgetary limitations as to what humans and machinery can do, and the only way to overcome these constraints is to construct a virtual world.

I think Cameron views Avatar as a testbed for technology, a vehicle to change moviemaking; all other aspects of the film (dialogue, storyline, etc.) were secondary when he wanted to produce this, in my opinion. I think he realizes that it's becoming increasingly difficult to entertain audiences, much less retain their interest for an extended period purely by conventional methods. People will, and have become disinterested in a medium if no one takes the initiative of pushing the boundaries, moving beyond the status quo; if Cameron has to take the reins, then so be it.

I say all that however I will buy it on release day.
I find a lot more antihype then hype, it is an incredibly good movie. I think the issue is that it looks so stunning that some people miss the story being to busy looking at the imagery. There is no other way to explain some of the insane comments I read on here.

The theatrical presentation was so impressive to me that I won't be picking it up on home video, it just wouldn't hold up to a giant cinemascope screen in 3D.
why not. I think deciding if something is hype or not based on a handful of posts is nuts, but I also buy many movies I don't see in theatre.
1) my set-up is better: big screen (10'), comfy seats (recline), everyone knows not to talk, no sticky floor, munchies can be anything....
2) $: add the price of the ticket, popcorn, drink, maybe some of the other costs and it is easy to get close to the price of the BD for one, let alone if you see it with date or multiple viewing (because once you own it, nothing stops you).

I see very few movies in theatre (1-3 a year), it is not worth it for most, but I blind buy a lot of them (more or less every week).

ps (then again I do think this movie is worth watching in 3D and I am glad I did see it)

I'm not a fan of the cheap CGI that permeates so many newer films, but this is NOT cheap, cheesy CGI by any stretch.
he has not seen it, he has no idea what t is like. This is an exception, I can't see it being done in anything but CGI, but often it could be done better then some of the cheap CGI used.

I have not yet seen Avatar.

I have decided, since life has been so BUSY lately (I haven't even had time to fire up my projector for weeks) that I will wait for the Blu-Ray.

I am sure that I won't be disappointed.

Yeah, the Na-vi would totally be CG. However, there are many tricks to pulling off many effects. I can imagine some of the effects shots of portions of Na'vi can be done via combination of miniatures and digital extensions (ala Lord of the Rings). What I'd do in making FX pictures, leave CGI for things that can't be done otherwise.

Default AVATAR - release date

I was at work tonight at blockbuster video and wanted to see if we had gotten a release date in the computer. and what you know....we did.

We have a release date of April 27th. I sure hope this is right, but its possible that it may change.

I may buy it day one, but i am most likely going to wait for the 3D release of this

The box office numbers will have to drop in a big way for a BD release date of April 27th. Plus with the Oscars in a few weeks and a very good chance to get the Best Picture award, I would not bet my life saving on April 27th

Why did this require another thread ??

There already exists on here - https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-mo...68-avatar.html

Would suggest monitors to close this one.

Come on now, Avatar looks amazing in IMAX. While Dances With Wolves is a great movie in its own right and has a terrific story. Dont be so quick to discount the greatness of Avatar. It just might not appeal to you.

You're so original...

27 April would be nice, but I think it will probably be more like early June before we see it.

Regardless, can't wait !

Dances With Wolves is not an original story either.

Turns out Dances With Wolves is a remake of Run of the Arrow.
