The fun part will be buying these for a marginal color improvement and then they actually do get full remasters in a few years necessitating another purchase.

Honestly for JP I won't complain though.

I just don't see that happening, given I assume they would contractually have to have Spielberg involved or at least approving. Maybe after he passes away?!?!? Not sure. Kind of morbid though to hope one of the greatest filmmakers has to pass away to get a new scan of one of his best films.

In the meantime, I've ordered both sets...just because I want the best quality currently available/possible.

I know. I'd be the monkey's uncle that'll triple dip a 4K set.

Gruv is usually amazing, but my set has a massive dent/gogue on the bottom, a literal hole in the steel.

No problem! I've finally figured out how to include images – here's just a bit of what I've been able to capture (all cell phone pics so keep that in mind).

Multiple people seem to show less magenta on the new disc. Definitely letting my preorder ship. Worst case I'm out a couple Doordashes at work.

Yeah from what I checked, I think that’s literally it. They dialed out the magenta push. Not that thats not significant, because it really does make a difference in a lot of the movie. The movie does really need a complete fresh remaster from scratch with Spielberg and Cundey supervising it, which would probably look like a more refined version of the 3D version.

We've been saying that for so long now, it's not like there's much hope of it to wait on. I love the movie enough to pay for an improvement now, whether it's what we deserve or not. Either Spielberg doesn't care or the negative's are gone like that rumor said, whichever.

I do find it strange that one of the most successful films in film history and certainly one of the crown jewels of Universal's catalog which was directed by one of the most celebrated directors in film history who has generally been very involved in delivering 5 star presentations of his films on home video (and is very much alive and available to participate) has consistently treated this film so poorly in home video presentations. Truly Baffling.

I remember when Blu-ray was new and really started dropping some reference worthy discs, the title i was most excited to see was Jurassic Park and it seemed like Spielberg was so involved in every release of his movies up until that point (Close Encounters was one of the earliest and still was a standout disc even a decade into that format, Jaws was a revelation, ET, Saving Private Ryan, War Of The Worlds, etc) and i remember JP being announced and was kind of surprised to see there was no fanfare about a new restoration or Spielberg's involvement and the disc came and was underwhelming to say the least. There was talk of some kind of 4K Restoration the year after when they did JP 3-D but they never redid that disc even with new JP movies being released and new interest in the franchise.

Then 4K UHD comes along and really solidified itself as the premium home video format and once again Spielberg is back dropping reference worthy discs blowing the Blu-rays out of the water and i'm like "OK, this must be the moment they were waiting for with Jurassic Park" and then that disc drops and it was even more disappointing than the Blu-ray. I mean Spielberg oversaw a 4K Restoration and approved a reference quality disc of ****ing "Hook" for chrissake but Jurassic Park gets nothing? No expense was spared for Paramount's "War Of The Worlds" disc including basically refinishing the film in 4K but JP gets nothing? "Schindler's List" was made the same year and by the same studio and it's home video record is impeccable, what happened with JP? If they truly lost the negative for this, that is horribly sad but how does that even happen to something of this much importance that is still relatively new (30+ years yes but not 80+ years old), and is at this moment actively making you money. This isn't some forgotten film from 50+ years ago, it's one of the most popular films ever made!

I am keeping my preorder for this and i hope this is an upgrade of some kind and i will be happy if it is but man it's so frustrating the lack of tangible information about this movie and it's current home video/digital history.

Spielberg lately seems to have become careless with his transfers. The UHD of The Sugarland Express is anything but reference no matter the criteria, easily the worst and most insulting of Spielberg's UHDs.

War of the Worlds was finished on film. For the 4K transfer they just scanned the conformed picture negative like it was any other photochemically finished film. Because it is one.
