Thanks for the pictures. It's a shame that the Steelbook has such a cheap matt finish. I could have imagined a satin finish here and some spot gloss. The print is also clearly too dark and the Pteranodons seem to me to come from Jurassic World.

The debossing is of course a nice idea.

What can you say about the film grain and the night scenes?

The 3D conversion was based on a 4K scan of the camera negative.

A new professionally performed postpriduction should suffice here. Simply reduce the megenta, add yellow and add some cyan to the night scenes. And of course the DNR should be removed.

Would be nice to see the US and International 4k bdinfo of the JP DV/DA discs. Some of the EU 4ks have got German DA. Would this cause Uni/SDS to reduce the video bitrate?

Regarding the color re-grade: is it on both the HDR and DV or just the new DV pass? Thanks

I don't think DV even has the ability to make color changes like that. It would only add additional brightness metadata and improved compression.

So, is the picture better with Dolby Vision? Is 4K good?

It's from the workprint. Test audiences deemed it too frightening.

Am I about to spend $60 on yet another release of JP just because they got rid of some magenta here and there? Absolutely!

my bad, i think what i was thinking of was Indiana Jones 4 (which is something that also might not be true but something i read on one of these review sites). I was just in the middle of a good rant and didn't bother checking.

No worries. Indy 4 was Spielberg's first DI *but* they also took it out to a neg cut so the 4K transfer was done from that, presumably with upscales for the VFX.

I'm glad we're moving in the right direction by getting rid of the ugly, old color grading, but I'm not gonna shell out for a double-dip until we get a full, proper remaster. It's insane that this movie of all movies is still stuck with this crappy master.

If I had to guess, I'd say maybe it'll get one at the next 5-year anniversary, or maybe once the majors have lost enough interest in home video that one of the boutiques gets a crack at it. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Be prepared for a very long wait. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes over 10, 15 or even 20 years for a full new master to happen. Besides, the current master is not great but could be A LOT worse.
