Presentation aside, I hadn't rewatched this in years and totally forgot how great this movie is!

I was also blown away by how well the CGI has held up, still looks great.

Highly recommend.
I can't wait to see the scene with the Roger Young. I'm sure it looks amazing. The effects in thie film really do hold up incredibly well. I just watched the blu-ray earlier this year.

Which HDR picture mode to use is somewhat up to personal preference I think. Most people would agree that Vivid results in overblown, inaccurate colours and shouldn't be used. Standard is probably closest to the "correct" look, but I have a room with a lot of backlight during the day so I usually use Bright as that's what tends to look best in my particular environment.
I'm also curious if it's advised to enable "dynamic contrast" for HDR? For DVD, blu-ray and normal viewing, I always leave that junk off. But I have read somewhere in another forum many months ago that HDR is intended to work in conjunction with dynamic contrast, and you aren't getting the maximum benefit from HDR if dynamic contrast is off. Is that just boloney? To me, dynamic contrast always hurts the image more than it helps. In my limited testing with HDR demo clips, I've come to the same conclusion - leave dynamic contrast off. It just seems to hurt more than help. Is this the wrong way of thinking with HDR?

Stick to what you're doing, mar3o. Dynamic Contrast is good for video games, bad for movies.

And ESPECIALLY where catalog titles in this format are concerned...it's almost like throwing money away preordering a UHD catalog disc.
Indeed, and after the fiasco with these new UHD sets just including the old BR disc it is very apparent the studios don't give a shit. A high tier release like Blade Runner with a shitty old low bitrate disc from the HDDVD days not getting replaced was my last straw. I'll wait until UHD are about 15 max 17 before buying anything anymore.

Still pissed there's not a new transfer for the 1080p disc (did I forget to mention that before ).
There are still many cinephiles that haven't gone UHD yet and distributors producing new 1080p transfers for older 4K titles will entice a larger market (Even at $9.50 you couldn't get me to buy it with the old BD disc).

Would have bought Blade Runner and Starship Troopers had they done what they oughta.
I agree. I will pick up the inevitable Blade Runner double set with the new film. That old bluray was good at best, and blurry at worst.

Yeah I disagree with this notion. There are many aspects that are dated about the old transfer. It's too bright to me, has a red sheen over it--just look at the newspaper comparisons on DVDBeaver--and overall the new transfer is just fine.

They are regrading these films, and to be honest a lot of director's prefer a darker tone. Fincher did the same thing with his films when they first went on bluray. This is a film at night, and overall even the 1080p presentation is more pleasing to my eyes. I mean you can raise your gamma or increase brightness a tad if you want.

It had to have been a mistake, just like Children of the Corn. Not gonna start waiting weeks and weeks for great releases because "you never know, there could be an error deal..." I'm happy to support catalog releases at the $20 price point.

Default Starship Troopers (1997) (20th Anniversary Edition) 4K UHD

The grain is definitely more noticeable than in prior versions. Less detailed screens, like the dance and ball game in the beginning I prefer the smoother looking UK Blu-ray. The 4K definitely has its shining moments though. Overall, I’d say it’s a slight upgrade, but It doesn’t blow me away.

That's what I was thinking, a mistake. I got lucky and grabbed Starship Troopers & Children Of The Corn at those low price points but missed out on The Fifth Element when it was just $13.97

Why isn't the Blu-ray the new transfer? What's the point? Is it at least mentioned on the box?

Because the format is 4K UltraHD and the Blu-ray is really included just for the extras?

But you're supposed to be buying "4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital." It's simply false advertisement. I think it's the first time they do this kind of crap. I guess after they've fooled enough people, they're going to sell the Blu-ray with the new transfer separately.

Se7en received a big contrast/colour change (you can see clearly what happens to the original 2K scan by watching an extra on PQ).
I even noticed a difference to a price of audio (after they remastered the soundtrack).
Not sure if CE3K is meant to be that dark, on the 1080p disc anyhow, perhaps a reassurance stating "a transfer approved by Spielberg" OR "approved by the DP"... Even if the new BD doesn't sit in the editing suite the entire film, but gives the director or DP a day/half-day going over how much they will alter warmth, contrast, black levels for crucial scenes and then the BD transfer tech can apply the Director/DP's to the entire film.

But you ARE getting a Blu-ray in with it, how on earth is that false advertising? Just because YOU want it to be a newly remastered version doesn't make it false when they state nothing to that effect on the cover. Christ on a bike.

Maybe they could only choose one; would you rather they put out a remastered Blu-ray or a new 4K UHD Blu-ray? Sony isn't exactly swimming in money right now as for example they've pretty much given up on real 4K for new movies.

With Starship Troopers, it states new 4K transfer. If it is only a new transfer on the UHD disc, it needs to be clearly stated "NEW 4K TRANSFER APPLIES TO UHD DISC ONLY".

Studios need to continue to support both formats equally and provide new 1080p transfers for movies such as Blade Runner and Starship Troopers. Especially since these transfers are getting dated.

I am hoping for a new Terminator 2 1080p transfer with the UHD, as the Studio Canal VC-1 Skynet Edition is a soupy mess.

But it's about more than just looking for improvements on the BD transfers;
but when they re-release the 1080pBD by itself, at the same time as UHD, there should be an expectation that your getting a new transfer. Exceptions are when recently (within 3-4 years) we've had the first BD release (eg. E.T.) of a 4K scan.

Alas, if there is anything to do with a new 4K scan, the 1080pBD should have an accompanying transfer, minted from the new 4K scan.

But why even make that distinction when the actual 4K disc is inherently assumed to be what people are buying it for? (Crazy, I know.) An improved pack-in disc exclusive to the 4K release is the exception, not the rule, and this is common across all the studios. If you want to complain then focus on the lack of a standalone BD remaster for X movie as that's where the issue really lies, but as pondered by Vangeli above the studios may not want to release a new BD and a new 4K at the same time, so they're putting all their eggs in the 4K basket.

No, it's assumable that it's the "4K remaster" in different formats. If it says nothing on the cover, it's practically lying by omission.
