What the hell is OEM? I know what that means in cars... but not computers... or is it the same thing?

Can you link me to the one you're getting?

not yet. You have to wait until a 1tb 2.5 laptop drive is out.

You are incorrect, sir. An OEM hard drive is not produced _by_ a different manufacturer. Rather it is produced _for_ a different manufacturer.

The drive in question will have been made by Western Digital in the same factory right along side the retail hard drives. The only difference is that the hard drive was intended to be sold to another company such as Dell for inclusion in their PCs.

The difference between a retail hard drive and an OEM hard drive is whether or not it comes in a pretty box, includes a software bundle of crap you don't need, and possibly the warranty may be different.

A PS3 can't use any of the software bundle anyway, so I see no reason to avoid OEM hard drives for PS3 upgrades. Unless you really need it to arrive in a pretty box.

I just got my 500gb drive in and I want to make sure I do everything correctly.

Right now i'm backing up the data utility to an external HDD.

After that finishes I install the drive, the PS3 formats it, then I install the data utility and i'm done...

right?

I hope its a high speed flash drive. I initially tried to back my stuff up on a "standard" speed USB 16Gb flash drive, and the estimated back up time was 32 hours . Popped in a high speed SD card and it only took 22 mins

Hard Drives are rated at 1000mb/GB, PS3's/ Windows systems rate them at 1024mb/GB, times that by 500, and thats all the GB's you are losing...

I have similar thoughts as well. I know a lot of people that fill up their hard drive never delete their demos and such, but I do which saves a lot of space.

However, I may not delete them if there was an option to place them in a folder. I just don't like it how they take up so much space. I'm very OCD when it comes to things like that.

Reinstalling? If you did a backup utility, you should not need to redownload/ reinstall anything..
