In my initial user review I mentioned the age of the film, which I now admit has little or nothing to with transfer quality in this particular case, since it's only been seven years and a lot of other/older Universal titles look just as good, if not better. I was simply giving a quick, though obviously uneducated, observation based on beginner's knowledge of film/transfer technicalities (or what I thought I knew) and what I literally saw with my own two eyes.
Since then, I'd still stick with my rating of a 4 and repeat that the film does have an unexpectedly high amount of artifacts and grain when Supremacy and Ultimatum look much better, despite only being two and five years down the road and with the same photographer in Oliver Wood. I'm guessing Universal encoded all three films around the same time, but for whatever reason Identity still has a fair amount of artifacts and grain. As long as they're encoded in 1080p and miles above DVD, though, I have no qualms. Oh, and in my "Overall" review of the box, I mention that while I like Casino Royale, I didn't care much for Quantum of Solace. Boy, was I wrong back then. I give all the credit in the world to Damon for an equally masterful performance being Bourne parallel to Craig as Bond. But after watching CR and QoS back-to-back a few times now, the storytelling adds a great sense of depth to Bond's character as a spy and a person, whereas Bourne is more so just an unfortunate result of "the system." Though, Supremacy did a great job trying to convey a sense of humanism within Bourne, and finally re-humanizng in Ultimatum. I haven't made an official user review for QoS yet to compliment my CR one, but you can read more about my interpretation of the new Bond via the Casino Royale: Collector's Edition user reviews. I also love that it introduced Pamela Landy into the series. I love Joan Allen, particularly in that role: smart, determined and yes sexy! I loved how Landy and Abbot butted heads throughout the film each of their own agendas. Great, great film!! |

I actually don't have a problem with the visual look of the first film. I don't think it's an over-DNR job. What I do appreciate about the first film over the other 2 is that it's shot naturally, instead of overly processed like SUPREMACY or processed as ULTIMATUM. I feel it's a good looking film.
As for as the sound I have ZERO complaints!! I was actually amazed by the DTSMA track. Didn't think this film's track would sound that good! In fact i'd rate the sound above SUPREMACY though the best track is ULTIMATUM. |

I thought Supremacy was the weakest out of the three. I love all three films, and I am often times torn between Identity and Ultimatum. I like Identity 'cos Damon plays the amnesia part perfectly, and I still love seeing how it all initially plays out. Ultimatum just finished it off beautifully, and the action was insane. I didn't care much for the camera shake in Supremacy, but it's still one of my fav's (just under Identity and Ultimatum).
I still can't believe I picked up this set back when it first got released for $34.99. I used a Best Buy Reward Zone Certificate and a tax software deal Best Buy had to drop the price from $64.99 to $34.99. If it doesn't drop in price on Black Friday, I'd wait for deepdiscount to have their sale. If you use Bing cashback, then you can save 4% off the price as well. Right now it would be around $57.57 using the cashback option. |
