I agree with you there. There's something special about the first 5 games that they've never really been able to recapture.
The reboot was fun but it lacks identity and a lot of the qualities that make a Tomb Raider game. It feels too much like every other action game on the market. Even Lara's character development was a bit all over the place. The Legend Trilogy was pretty lackluster too. Too much flash but not enough substance, almost as if they were playing it too safe because of the reception Angel of Darkness got. I also much prefer the original Lara's backstory that didn't involve any dead parents. She made her own path in life and came across as a much more fun, unique and independent character because of it. Now she's just another orphan with every storyline fixating on her endless mommy and daddy issues. 2001 movie, Legend, Anniversary, Underworld, 2013 Reboot, ROTTR, the current line of comics and now the upcoming movie reboot. Its cheapened her character and turned the series into a family soap opera. |

They where great when they released, but they have aged very poorly. It is just more of an issue with some games then it is with others, and they really suffer more then most games do from when they released. As a result i'd much prefer playing the more recent series then the originals now, as games simply have gotten better and the limitations that existed back then hold it back now.
Also the stills being released for the film top me just don't look right. I also worry that the actress won't be able to pull of the physical requirements of the role with it still felling semi grounded. Hoping official footage looks great but something just seems off with what I have seen for the film so far. Then again stills aren't much to go on, though the director apparently talking about turning a bunch of square properties into a cinematic universe makes me worried even more then I otherwise would (seriously film makers, stop trying to make everything a damn cinematic universe). If they want it to be similar to the latest reboot, it has to be a hard r film. She grabs people from behind and stabs them in the side of the head with a knife, she drags people under water then stabs them in the neck, she purposefully causes people to burn alive and takes joy in it, her reaction to killing for the first time, the general brutal style to the game going as fair as having her being reborn in blood (as in a literal pool of blood), an idea taken from The Descent. But lets face it, this'll probably be pg-13 and given that it is a game based on a movie. It sadly will probably suck. |

Well that was a big part of the game, the character isn't particularly likeable. Which is one of the things I like about the reboot. The viciousness of the kills simply can't be in a pg13 film. However it is an adaption and they can change things. We shall see, but I am setting my expectations super low and I have some fairy large doubts based on what has been shown.
