You're betting on it having a new transfer of the theatrical cut essentially. Everything else you can get elsewhere (4:3 standard def TV cut, extras recycled from the European version).

Don't get me wrong, I'm interested too, but it's too little incentive to risk for a $60+ set. I'll stick with this German disc which cost me $16 until you guys tell me otherwise. (That said, I'll probably order it anyway...the packaging looks nice )

I agree about the glitch - very sloppy, and that's what would keep me away from the German release. Still waiting to see how the Japan release compares.

I'm honestly not sure I like the idea of the quality changing back-and-forth throughout the tv extended cut. I think that would just take me out of the film constantly. I'd think I'd rather have the entire tv cut the same lower quality throughout so my eyes would adjust early on and accept that quality for the entire film, as opposed to seeing just how bad the tv material is by switching back-and-forth. At least then it would be a consistent experience.

Long before the DVD I had the extended cut on two VHS tapes that I had someone make for me. It was ripped from the broadcast that used to come on the sci-fi channel about 10 years ago (in 1.33:1) with the commercials edited out. Now, talk about poor PQ. Getting the 2006 DVD was a miracle. Maybe Universal will give us another miracle if the JP release is not up to snuff.

I'm hoping for a new theatrical transfer or encoding. I'm also hoping for the extended cut to be in high def and not just on a dvd thrown in the set. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong and I'll most likely get the DE release. Hopefully they will fix the problem of the PIP.

I have one of those feelings that the Japanese set will be a "blink and you'll miss it" release. I'm not saying it'll sell out, but I see a high premium price after it's released.

There's nothing wrong with the theatrical cut on the U.S. disc. Going from VC-1 to AVC would help slightly, but the bitrate is already nearly 31 Mbps as it is. Of course, grain and color would look significantly better with a 4K scan, which the film has never received to my knowledge. However, with Lynch disowning the film since its release I highly doubt we will see a 4K master anytime in the near future. We just passed the 30th anniversary in 2014 so unless Universal just has money lying around we are stuck with the current transfer indefinitely.

Maybe it's me but I find the TV cut itself to be sloppy and glitchy to begin with, so a 2 second glitch isn't a big deal. Scenes are not where they should be, there are comically repeated dialogue exchanges, etc. I like watching it for the deleted scenes but it's hard to accept it really as a standalone viewing experience on its own.

That's one of those "whatever floats your boat" deals. I'm the opposite, I like knowing where the alterations are. If I want to watch the movie itself I just stick with the only version Lynch approved.

It's just too bad he's not interested in going back in and doing another edit of the film. You'd think this material still exists...I guess if TWIN PEAKS can come back then who knows. It sucks because you just know there's a really really good film in DUNE, if it just had more room to breathe, but he's never wanted to revisit it.

If it already says "4:3 standard," why would you think that it's going to be in HD?

Agreed. I ended up buying it anyway for that reason, I think it's $55 shipped to the US at the moment through Amazon jp. Wasn't as bad of a hit as I thought, and if it's a total loss, I'll sell it off later on. I'm just not expecting much from it.

I want the extended cut just like it is presented on the 2006 DVD. It needs to be just as it aired on TV, but in 2.39:1. So, yes the 2 second video glitch is a big deal IMHO.

Technically, not even the 2006 DVD presented the TV cut exactly as it aired originally on TV though, since it was split into 2 parts, had a "what happened last night" recap and ran the end credits both times. The DVD version cut that out and strung both parts together.

That's exactly how I want it on BD. I'd also love it in both 1.33:1 and 2.39:1, but beggers can't be choosers.

I'm gambling on the theory that they are calling the "4:3 Standard" the aspect ratio and not high def/standard def etc... So many fun things in bad translations.

Just so you guys can see it, this is the 2 second glitch "preview window" we were talking about:

Apologies for horrible cell phone cap, but at least it gives you the general idea of what's briefly on-screen.

Yeah that needs to be fixed. That screams bootleg to me. Since this is a commercial release, it needs to be addressed.

Damn, that looks horrible. I can hear it now. "She disobeyed and gave birth to a son, Paul. Paul Atreides." While I'm thinking: "Wtf is that in the corner?"

Not to open a can of worms, but it's worth asking - why are there so many DUNE Blu-Rays in Germany? Multiple 2D releases, multiple 3D releases...very strange. Doesn't seem like they are all fully licensed.

The French Ultimate Edition DVD did have it presented in two parts FYI. Not sure if they carried that version across to the 3 disc BD edition that was released last year

Fry's has the US edition for $4 again this week, but I didn't pick it up yet because I wanted to find out first, was the cover originally released in a "foil" version (like The Thing) or was it always the flat print? I want to hunt that cover down if it ever existed. Thanks.

Relatively certain it was always flat print.
