Hey, they fixed this shot.
Some effort has been put into this, perhaps not as dramatically as we might have preferred but things have done.

https://slow.pics/c/QyhVtpjV

There appears to be an appreciable increase in clarity and detail thanks no heavy handed DNR. That improved detail is perhaps even more appreciable in motion.

Even the computer screens in the background have improved detail.

https://slow.pics/c/SryroDGH

Finer details appear to be much better resolved.

Improved fine facial details and the tie resolves greater detail that reveals the textile.

https://slow.pics/c/qhKfpDjF

Does that dino and Nedry shot have the visible wires?

The 35mm archival print I saw of this a few years back direct from Universal's archives (so pristine that the projectionist was forbidden from threading the reels together and we had to wait like 5 minutes between every other reel change!) was one of the most vibrant and beautiful prints I've ever seen and it's so sad this movie continues to look like dogshit on home video, just so bizarre and inexcusable for what was once the highest grossing movie of all time. But then again Titanic and Star Wars etc all have serious, serious issues on that front too, maybe it's a curse...

In my opinion a $60 steelbook tax feels premium-ish when your only concern is the original film and there’s no other way to get it. Regardless, Universal knows many die-hards will pay it, thus perpetuating the cycle.

Apologies again for being such a stick in the mud. It’s just been such a slow grind wait to get what many would likely consider a great looking presentation of this incredibly popular and beloved movie.

Yeah, after looking at more images the wind's been kinda knocked outta my sails. They really did walk-back a lot of the DNR but it's still there on CG scenes and the "new" color timing is a mixed bag. T-Rex scene is still too pale. And the lack of original audio! Tsk tsk! Maybe one day these wrongs will be righted. At least they did something but sometimes a little something ain't enough. There will be alternatives soon to which I'll continue sticking with till that golden day comes we get a nicer remaster.

Yeah, I don’t really want to pay $60 for this when I already have the old set of all the movies in 4K and I just want the improved first one. I’m hoping it’ll get an individual release or this set goes to under $40.

I’m also hoping the digital versions will be updated while I wait for the above. I guess Apple already was? But not MA/FAH

I also saw a special print of this straight from Universal’s archive (maybe we were at the same screening) and it looked incredible. This SHOULD be a demo disk.

it's better to cheap out/"enhance" bigger movies because of prospects for profit margins and what they think "audiences want".

I can’t find the new JW Trilogy thread.

What’s added to those movies? They already had DV, right? I am hoping all 3 of those have Atmos. If not, not much reason for me to buy them.

World was only HDR10 as it was released first back in 2018. Only the last two films were given DV

Short of re-rendering all the effects, this could be as good as they could ever look.
Several of the opticals and VFX filmouts have been smashed with DNR specifically for the 4K transfer. The CG *is* fairly low rez in itself, yes, I think something like 1K (albeit uprezzed to at least 2K for the filmout), but that is not the cause of all the processing done to them here.

We'll see in motion though.
Yeah, I've flipped thru a lot of the caps and I'm pleased. Not overjoyed as the underlying 'grain management' still makes the grain look 'fizzy' around edges, and the poorer chroma containment of the new encode is also fudging things (FELs always seem to work betterer in motion than on stills tho, so it should be rectified by Dobly playback), but there's a significant bump in detail and at least the grain itself doesn't look as blotchy as it does on the first UHD. They seem to have 'fixed' part of the Gennaro jeep scene too, the colour and range seemed to drain out of it as the shot went on but it looks much less dupey now.

People will always keep ranting and raving and ranting and raving and ranting and raving about the colour, how it's not right blah blah, but I don't fookin care. I was happy enough with the colour on the first UHD and that they've dialled out some magenta here and there on the new UHD is just a bonus.

Excited to see this in motion, but then I didn't hate the first UHD either. I think I'm more interested in seeing caps of Lost World and JPIII.

I read somewhere that the CGI in Terminator 2: Judgment Day had a resolution of 1K and ILM increased the resolution for Jurassic Park, I think 2K would be possible here. Disney created a digital intermediate for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 4K resolution back in the 90s.

"1993: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – First film to be entirely scanned to digital files, manipulated, and recorded back to film at 4K resolution. The restoration project was done entirely at 4K resolution and 10-bit color depth using the Cineon system to digitally remove dirt and scratches and restore faded colors."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_intermediate

In this demo video you can see how detailed the CGI was back then. Universal really did a lot to make these scenes look bad in home entertainment.

If you are new to Gruv, you can use their code Signup20 for 20% off $60 + tax. So the street sale price is $48 + tax.

Yeah, at the end of the day we can enjoy some highly flawed discs and here we're getting the best JP version image quality-wise, but it's a little bit frustrating they put some actual effort into this new version and yet not as much as they could

Did some experimenting with the iconic T-rex shot at the end, actually turned out pretty decent. I just upscaled the blu-ray with Topaz, regraded it and added some grain. Not perfect by any means, but if I can get a decent result like this... surely universal could come with something better, preferably without using AI. Baffling honestly.

Going to pass on this. Not worth $60 for alternative color timing in a few scenes with largely the same transfer.

What’s getting to me is that for the World Trilogy, all they did was add Atmos to the first one. That’s the only upgrade. Nice to have Atmos on that one, but why not add it to the other 2?!

Oh goodness. As someone who has worked in color timing these last 5-6 years, statements like this are always a bit disheartening to read. I understand grading doesn’t really register with a lot of people but we do pour our hearts (and countless days) into it. Film is a moving target, as you often say, but even so there is almost always an objective threshold in terms of general accuracy.

When Technicolor here in Hollywood filed for bankruptcy a few months ago it was a historic shock and genuinely heartbreaking. An entire generation of experts have now either been forced into retirement or simply moved on to greener pastures, including many with vast amounts knowledge from the analog era.

I think many care about this aspect more than they realize.

Now that the "Remastered UHD" ship has sailed, I do kind of agree there is little point in voicing how we would have liked this release to be. Perhaps in a few years time we'll get what some of us have been requesting.. assuming physical media will still be a thing, and AI upscaling won't be the norm.

Speaking of AI however, for those who do care about how one of the most significant movies in f̶i̶l̶m̶ history is presented and preserved to the public, I've run some 35mm grabs through a free online AI Upscaler to offer a better general idea of how this film could have looked, for decades at this point, had Universal Home Entertainment been run differently.. and perhaps more consumers been a little less forgiving and a bit more demanding.

Not from a lecturing "how it should look like" point of view, but a simple aesthetic one.

But this wraps up this little detour on my end.

Eager to see some TLW and JPIII screenshots, and read more impressions on the new track.

Unquestionably better.
I certainly agree with it being baffling, with respect still to those being "perfectly happy" with Universal efforts and the state this legendary film is watchable at home.
