What is Spirit Entertainment? I'm seeing JP 4k trilogy a land other Universal BD/4ks being released by them.

I was gonna say: it actually looked from those caps like Lost World has had just as much if not more of an upgrade than Jurassic Park, definitely less black crush to my eyes. So glad I ordered this! Now we just need caps from III

I hope JP III now resembles this look again with the strong green and blue tones:

How does the Atmos track compare to the now missing DTS:X track?

Is it closer to or farther away from the original DTS 5.1 mix?

I know the DTS:X mix is a remix in itself, but it seems crazy Universal have adopted a one-track only policy. Some people might have actually liked that mix.

Well to the surprise of no one, LW looks great on the new 4K. It had the least issues to begin with, but they did manage to improve it considerably. Once again though, this movie is probably the biggest chore to sit through out of the six Jurassic films.

No, I think this surprises many.

Yes I've seen Dominion and though it's flawed, it keeps my attention more so than Lost World. A better story can still be hindered by "devil may care" execution.

The sixth film is literally one of the worst studio movies I've seen in my life. Gave it a 1 on Letterboxd. Comparing it to Lost World is ridiculous IMO.

Our differences are what makes life fun though!

Sorta.

I know there's been endless discussion online about the various sound mixes for JP1 over the years, but one of my go-to spots to compare is right at the beginning.

Right after the opening fade-in, there are two close-ups of park workers. In some mixes, the foliage sound effects suddenly drop in volume when it cuts to them. In others, the effects are incredibly loud in the surrounds over the two closeups.

On the PCM stereo laserdisc, the 5.1 Dolby Digital DVD, and the 2011 BD 7.1, it's the former. On the 2013 3D BD, the 2018 UHD DTS:X, and now the 2025 UHD Atmos, it's the latter.

Was this a change made to the 3D release, or was it this way in the theatrical DTS mix? Maybe earlier home video mixes were actually based on the theatrical Dolby Stereo mix?

Obviously, there are plenty other spots for comparison, but that one jumps out at me every time I watch the movie on various platforms.

This is lovely to hear, JPIII really needed proper near black.

We previously even got texture issues because of overexposed areas, like the infamous seamline on the T-Rex belly:

This alone would be a very welcome improvement.
Granted, it would need to be covered in teal to get close to how it was originally conceived and finished, but that would very likely be rejected by some consumers and it's understandable Universal wouldn't go there.

The Lost World.. I see people cheering about the brighter presentation, so I'm glad for them.
If those screenshots are indicative, I think I'll stick with the previous version when it comes to official releases. Definitely closer to the noir theatrical TLW rich in black crush and silhouettes.

Warners used to distribute Universal's home video product in the UK. Now it's done by Spirit Entertainment. They're just reprinting lots of titles with their name in the fine print on the back.

I always LOVED The Lost World and while it's obviously a step down from the original film (so what?), it has its own distinct style, atmosphere and it's not a simple rehash of the first film. They don't make sequels like that anymore.

For those that have the new steelbook, is it a pain to get the discs out? I saw a pic a few days ago somewhere here, and it looks like they are partially stacked on each other on that right side (not 100% stacked).

Might keep my old 25th anniversary steelbook which has flippers and put the new discs in that.

I'm not sure what to make of the Lost World caps - (Its the only JP sequel I care about) but I am not sure if the new one looks nicer than the old, perhaps in terms of the colour grade, but it almost looks as though its had a new layer of DNR over it.

Nope, no issues getting the discs in and out.

I can't compare (nor remember) the original DTS track. I will say that the Atmos track in JP is a fun listen. The directional and imaging cues using the overhead speakers gives it an accurate and enveloping sound design.

I prefer the Atmos track vs the still very good DTS X track on JP.

The very first shot with the title looks to be smoothed over, indeed. But maybe it's just because of the boosted contrast the grain seems to be more pronounced here, as is the case with the rest of them.

The best track is still the original theatrical DTS CD-ROM

Found some notes about the new Remix:

"The Atmos is a new remix, even more revisionistic, with added foleys and new sound effects, the previous DTS:X remix is more faithful to the 5.1 original, also despite some minor clipping it didn’t have the limiting done on the Atmos:

https://slow.pics/c/MPnUUpXH

Both have different foleys at specific times, for e.g.:

Interesting that the Atmos mix has more peak limiting, while the DTS-X had more hard clipping.

So the transients have been more aggressively compressed, but if it does not sound fatiguing or distorted then it might be fine for me.

Still wish I could hear the original DTS cinema track.

I thought the Atmos mix was created with the original elements, kind of shocked and not shocked that they spent money on including new foley/sound effects.

That is a bit of a letdown. (Of course after I placed an order for it, the bad news starts to seep in)
