JP1 was on the family menu tonight.

Glad I kept my order. Improved encoding and grain structure with it. Was handled far better than recent WB output (Dirty Harry). Grain looked organic without futzing, smearing, trailing or magnetic type movements.

Based off early screenshots I thought maybe roughly the 1st 20 minutes had that magenta looked removed. But after comparing to my original release there quite a bit removed here and there throughout the film. Better contrast too.

Original color timing debate aside this now looks like an organic film like 4K presentation. I'm happy with it and looking forward to TLW tomorrow night.

If you're happy with JP1, then you'll be happy with TLW and JP3. Even Jurassic World with DV is a step up.

Just watched my copy.

Grain management was off the charts. MEL and FEL layers were absolutely spot on, and the new encoding is terrific. I can only imagine if VDMS or Fidelity in Motion had done the encoding. Sub-20Hz bass levels were also excellent and not clipped.

I liked the part with the dinosaurs.

P.S. All of the above, I just made up. I just wanted to feel part of the knowledgeable in-crowd. Cheers.

My Gruv were individually wrapped in a bunch of bubble wrap each and then shipped in a box with extra padding!

Able to get a hold of pic:

basically much less saturated than the 3D blu and a touch less magenta and trace more yellow

and lots less magenta and more yellow than the first UHD and window color tunrs out very different

I haven't gotten to look at my new set yet but anyway it's a little dangerous to judge the contrast of UHD screen caps since the HDR->SDR can often make things in that regard not really match the actual look of the disc displayed natively. Color-balance and detail are the easier things to judge from UHD screen caps.

I'm suspicious that the home version with thunderous LFE are revisions from the original theatrical where the LFE doesn't seem so heavy. I think some make the LFE MUCH louder than on the original theatrical. The original track LFE doesn't look super hot at all.

If they were there and buried in the original mix, and yet are now more pronounced so that you can hear them, then in my mind that is an addition. I've seen the film hundreds of times, across many formats, viewed the waveforms, and I can say that some of this stuff was not there. The entire balance of the original has changed. This isn't your dad's Jurassic Park DTS 6 track.

It's not grossly changed, but to use the word original to describe any part of it isn't telling the full story.

Why exactly was the magenta purge only done for part of the film?

I understand neither are ideal, but between the Atmos and DTS: X, which do you prefer? Which treats John Williams' score the best? All this talk about boosted effects makes me wonder if it comes at the expense of the music. That would be a damn shame.

The music feels just right in both, thankfully!

This. Mine does alright mapping, but DV makes it bester.

When you take JP III less as a follow up to the grandeur of the previous 2 and view it more as a slasher with various Dinos doing the slicing, you can really get into the groove of it much more imo. It knows the mission: get in, show some carnage, get out. It doesn’t get bogged down in the attempted commentary of the later films, and it knows it doesn’t have the pedigree of Spielberg’s hand behind it so it just leans into sheer entertainment.

There’s plenty of things it could do better, sure. But when I want something light and dino damage centric, there’s way worse options.

Having rewatched JPIII last night after nearly 20 years, whatever impetus I might have had to defend it just isn't there anymore. It's just a simplistic, rushed movie with a plot that adds nothing to the franchise, and the characters are so bland that we never heard of them again, for good reason. It's childlike, not in a good way. My appreciation for TLW and the JW trilogy has grown because of this disappointing rewatch.

The Williams score sounds grand, makes me wish for an Atmos mix of the soundtrack in hi-res.

By the way, when the score was remastered in 2016 for the box set, they discovered the magnetic masters had already started to degrade and were shedding. Mike Matessino backed them up to 192k/24-bit digital. But scary to think stuff as recent as the early 1990s are in danger of being lost forever.

Yes, but when you use the term "added" people are thinking additional foley and re-recorded sfx and things like in Jaws (another Spielberg film remixed) or Superman: The Movie.

No, this isn't the DTS-6 track. This is a new Dolby Atmos rendition, by Skywalker Sound. So by default it's going to sound different. Atmos itself is much more capable with full range surrounds, discrete LFE, height channels, surround back channels and the like. It also isn't lossy compressed, which theatrical DTS is, so there's no compression tricks going on. JP has a very dense, layered mix. This is it without limitations.
