Italians have an anti-science thing going on unfortunately, I once had a fight with my brother because I tried to explain to him that Homeopathy was bullshit, even my science teacher essentially told me not to bother with black holes implying that they were some sort of sci-fi crap (to be fair, she was a geologist, not the first time someone expert in a certain field is incredibly ignorant in others).
The reason I like Doctor Who or the Fantastic Four is that for once the scientist, however flawed he might be, he is undisputably the HERO, instead of the villain.

I also add that many tendencies in pop culture here are heavily influenced by american pop culture, one of our longest running comics is a Western (Tex Willer) and another is the Mickey Mouse magazine, and 90% of TV fiction that isn't complete rubbish is imported and dubbed american shows.
When I stumbled into english stuff I found it mightly refreshing because they don't seem to have the same hang-ups against heroes that don't punch/shoot things as the americans or at least not as strong.

More or less, though it is also because here american pop culture is dominant for better or worse.

Italy also threw a group of scientists in jail for failing to predict an earthquake.

But religious people go free when they fail to predict an earthquake?

Agreed. It's also what makes Star Trek great.

Too often we see in movies, "science" is something to be scared of.

I think that it's just that people who don't embrace science are usually too stupid to be credible threats as villains.

That's why I love Star Trek too.

A pity that so much sci-fi Hollywood does is like this:

To be fair to Italians, the average American posting here gets most of their scientific knowledge (uses the word with maximum creativity) from TV and Movies. Which, in reality, means they are pretty damned ignorant themselves.

Well I think on BD.com one's scientific knowledge depends on the films one has watched. Personally, I think you are not taking Japanese cinema into enough consideration here.

FF made $253,000 on Wednesday on 2500+ screens---$98 per screen. At $10 a ticket that's 10 people per screen per day.
But I want to know more about the flying spaghetti monster.

The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, after having existed in secrecy for hundreds of years, came into the mainstream just a few years ago*.

With millions, if not thousands, of devout worshipers, the Church of the FSM is widely considered a legitimate religion, even by its opponents – mostly fundamentalist Christians, who have accepted that our God has larger balls than theirs.

Some claim that the church is purely a thought experiment or satire, illustrating that Intelligent Design is not science, just a pseudoscience manufactured by Christians to push Creationism into public schools. These people are mistaken — The Church of FSM is legit, and backed by hard science. Anything that comes across as humor or satire is purely coincidental.

Yes, well, as I said, as long as we have seen it on TV or in the movies we know it is solid science.

It's more that the Hero seems to always be someone who gives a variation of "You don't play god!" *punch*, rarely it's another scientist who wins by out-sciencing the villain.

Mothra is as good of an explanation for the origin of life on Earth as any.

After having been reduced to around 1600 theaters this week end, FF is confirmed as the bomb it was destined to be, with this week being probably its last in the larger circuit.

Current estimate:
- $52.6m Domestic
- $93.5m foreign

WW Total (at the 4th week mark): $146.1m
Estimated Budget: $150m + (including marketing, the movie itself is supposed to be a $120m romp)

Estimated studio take so far: +/- $75m (WW)
