I'm pages behind, but I swear some of the screencap comparisons I see on this site look as different as me switching from Cinema mode to Filmmaker mode on my C3 lol.

Those changes were made for the 3D version. The new UHD is based on the same version as the previous one, only slightly color corrected and with better grain.

They did remove the Dilophosaur's frill strings and erased the seams in its frill iirc. So some of it carried over but I don't believe all of it did.

Oh so this new 4K disc is based on the 35mm scan that was done for the 2011 blu-ray? That sounds exciting.

No. It's the same transfer as the last 4k disc with some walked-back DNR and a Dolby Vision pass.

I liked the look of the professionally scanned print VickPS had shared images of earlier in this thread more than the look of that project. Not that it looks bad at all (and I'm not sure how it was scanned/adjusted) and it may just be the print, but I feel a lot of these fan scans are almost afraid to show any "teal" or tints even if they're there on the original prints.

I remember when the golden appearance of Raiders of the Lost Ark on Blu-ray was being heavily criticized, then a fan scan came out without this golden appearance where the Golden Idol was silver. I recall there being something similar happening with a scan of the Matrix which didn't seem to have a green tint in any of the shots that I could see, which was pretty strange considering scenes set inside of the Matrix are actually supposed to look green.

Those scenes were not DNR’d in the previous 4K release, so I’m breaking my head thinking why they had to slap DNR on the new one. My only explanation would be some wise guy decided LW looked too grainy in comparison to too smooth JP, so they kinda went the middle way - let’s release more grain for the new JP release and let’s slap some random DNR on LW for better consistency. They never learn

Oh meh. I'll stick with the 4k 35mm fan scan then. Money saved.

Was that done on the old UHD?

Only change are the strings on the dilophosaurus frills being erased. This change started with the 3D for obvious reasons but has carried over to all releases since, including both 4k releases. I'd assume its Spielberg altering obvious effects seams - as he did with the Indiana Jones trilogy on UHD - but he left all the others in (my favorite being the puppeteer pushing the raptor's rear down in the kitchen doorway). So, yeah not a perfect representation of the original theatrical release (I prefer seeing the craft on display, no matter how sloppy) but a pleasing presentation regardless.

Erasing strings is one thing (I'd prefer they be left in)

but altering cigarette smoke, digital hairdos, resizing doors, and the other things in the YT video I shared is too much change for me.

This film deserves a true restoration from a 35mm OCN and/or print shown in 93. Something along the lines of what Criterion or Arrow does. At this point I'm certain it will never happen. Like I said, I'll stick to the 35mm 4k fan scan as it really is fantastic.

I haven't looked at the video but they're prolly comparing the Blu to the 3D converted version, which has all of the 'alterations' you mentioned for what I like to think are obvious reasons.

Most of my 4K collection is based on your thoughts @Geoff D so if you end up doing a review of this new 2025 4K JP disc and the changes are not there it just might enter my collection...

Yeah, none of those alterations are on the 4K so once again YT is the clownshow of information and people need to stop fishing for reasons to poo poo this release.

If anything I'm just looking forward to Geoff's review since he at least knows how to be on the level.

They won't be. Those changes were not done for stylistic reasons but to facilitate the 3D conversion, they have to patch/paint out/resize/recomposite/recreate various elements for the conversion process.

The UK set isn't out until the end of the month, I'll certainly chime in with my thoughts.

I'm wondering the same thing? Any improvement over the audio on the other 4ks? That was DTS-X and these are Dolby Atmos, but remixed for this release I think I recall reading? Sounds like subtle picture improvements, but what about the audio?

Dang! There were strings on the dilophosaur frills? I never noticed any of these scenes that underwent alterations. I'm so unobservant. Either that or my eyes suck even worse than I thought. Then again, I only recently noticed the strings on the Toho kaiju movies

I’d never heard about the puppeteer and kitchen raptor until it was mentioned earlier ITT and went to look it up but couldn’t bring myself to watch more than a few seconds of the yt vid that was supposedly gonna be pointing it out because I didn’t wanna ruin my favourite part of the movie lol

In retrospect and hindsight, which releases would you say are the most “filmic” of Spielberg UHDs and BDs?

Discussing grade differences from 35mm scans seems like an impossibility here due to multiple factors like legitimate color differences between prints and whatever custom color correction goes into it after it's scanned.

Beyond quantifiable differences, everyone will have their preference anyway. Teal has its place but sometimes less is more. DNR aside, this custom regrade of the 4k release of True Lies looks much better imo:
