It'll likely still be in theaters then but okay.

And as for people whining about a 3-D re-release, you're going to see a lot of films re-released in proper 3-D so get used to it. At least he was up front about it. You do what you think is right with your wallet.

I don't know if this has been asked before, but will the November 3D release of the movie with new bonus features include a 2D version? Man this 3D thing sucks....

The BD specifications for 3D include backwards compatibility. Essentially all 3D BD should play back flawlessly on older hardware.

(note the word should, I suspect that many players will need a firmware update, and some older players may never get a firmware update. I eventually plan to upgrade my projector to 3D, but I am not ready to replace a 7 month old projector. I plan to buy the 2D version. IF the new 3D disks really are 100% compatible with 2D equipment, I will probably buy 3D disks in the future - I want somebody else to be the guinea pig before I buy).

It sucks it has to be a double dip, it would be better if they just waited until November to release the real one.

Guinea pig?

Just to buy a 3D encoded blu-ray to watch in 2D on a 2D player isn't really having to take any risk... no more than how much you worried about whether you'd be able to enjoy a Blur-ray that had lossless audio even if you maybe didn't have a receiver that could handle HDMI or a BD player that could decocode lossless to PCM.

The way 3D is getting put on BD is sortof like how DTS-HD MA works by adding extra meta-data to a standard DTS "core" track... legacy gear just uses the core track and is happy. BD players that can handle lossless grab the whole thing.

3D is basically "left eye" which is like the "core" audio stream... that's your basic 2D image. Then extension frames that regular players just ignore allows a 3D blu-ray Player to construct the right eye so you end up with stereo video.

Buying a 3D projector? Ok, that's more of a risk. Wait on that one! But don't worry about whether 3D discs themselves will play in your 2D player: you should be perfectly fine.

BTW, AVATAR and a few soon releases will be "dual" since he's waiting on the 3D release until later anyway given that 3D authoring isn't really ready yet and there's no base of 3D hardware. But in the future studios will problaby just do one release for most 3D releases, and so you'll be able to build a 3D library before you even have to spend money on the 3D display. That's a good thing... who wants to have to re-buy all those same titles later just to get them in 3D? Makes more sense for them to 3D from the get-go just like you probably collected 16x9 anamorphic DVDs even before you had a 16x9 TV.

win-win.

Toy Story Blu-rays are a bit frustrating, since they're getting released without the 3D off the bat is seems. I really didn't want to have to re-buy those later.

It's not a double dip since you KNOW that you can wait until November if you want already.

How is adding the additional *choice* if buying it earlier as well making is "has to be a double dip" versus the release only having been slated for November? Just wait until November, then it's exactly the same for you as if Fox has never offered you the option to buy earlier.

Everything I have read says otherwise. We'll need new TVs and only a few (PS3) players will be upgradeable via firmware.

Although, I have to admit I did end up with pretty much every release of T2, either I bought it or I got it as a present...
At least I don't like Avatar..

Yeah i also want to know if the 2D version will be included on the 3D version. I have not seen any proof that it will be on.

I'm a sucker and will be double-dipping for this one. I'll probably give the bare-bones edition to my brother in Nov.

but he was talkign that on old blu-ray player it will play 2D version without problems, so 3D disk have to be compatible with old player to play 2D version (not 3D, there you will need new player, new Tv, etc..)

The 2D release is going to be barebones. The 3D release will have all the features, but it will play in 2D on your regular Blu-Ray player and TV.

Yes, you have seen proof. As a poster said above, it is a requirement for 3D Blu-Rays that they be backwards compatible. That means that every single 3D Blu-Ray will play in 2D on your old hardware.

I really hope this movie revives the $19.99 release day trend

I wonder how many copies it will sell if it is only $20

Considering it's 20th Century Fox, I wouldn't get your hopes up...even for a barebones disc But I will still be first in line to buy both releases anyway
