Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask but hoping to get some clear answers. I have been looking to add Dracula to my collection for a few years now. I do not have a 4K player but am region free for regular Blu ray.
Is the best option for the movie in terms of PQ and extras the Supreme Cinema release or is there a European disc out there that is even better? Or does the regular Blu ray included with the 4K release offer any improvements? Thank you in advance for anyone who can help me with this. |

Me too. Zoom let me down on this, ordered on Tuesday and they still haven't posted, so have gone with Amazon at the better price!

They do show the extra raw detail, just not the full image. Like the difference in brightness between those two caps, it's impossible to judge if that's on the 4K disc or due to the conversion to SDR by caps alone. Which is why it's helpful the poster has posted the target luminance used as well for those that can see that number and understand it, though I don't quite understand this bit myself yet.

Highlight detail, yes. Spatial resolution, ehhhhh not so much. Those pics demonstrate my initial thoughts on it - when I A/B'd it to the Mi4K Blu-ray - down to a 'T': the 4K pass adds finer grain and the merest smidgeon of extra resolution, looking fine in and of itself but upon comparison (both here AND when viewing in motion) it's simply not some kind of astonishing night and day difference to my eyes.

I think the movie varies a large amount in how detailed it looks due to the effects and lighting used to capture it. In scenes like the chapter stop where Ryder is writing and looking at the kama sutra book you can see a great leap in detail, IMO, but in other scenes like the heavily effects driven opening not so much.

This is the only 4K release I have seen so far that looks completely natural. What else is on this level?

Had a look at this now. My first proper* 4K title of a film made wholly on film.
Hells bells, the grain! That explains the moaning Amazon reviews. Shots with optical work don't really benefit in resolution, but the rest is nicely sharp. There's not a great deal that seems to benefit from HDR on first glance, but every so often you get a light source that glows with an intensity SDR can't maintain. Dracula's green mist appearance has a vibrancy you don't realise is lost in SDR until you see it in HDR. The end of the film with the sunrise in exaggerated tones is even more atmospheric with a richer glow. That's only from flicking through the chapter points, I haven't viewed it all yet. I'm particularly keen to see how Dracula's castle looks in it's entirety. *Dawn of the Dead 4K doesn't count cos it's so bad an implementation of 4K UHD. |

Arrived in the post today and scanned the first 5 or so minutes. Sony are really nailing it with their catalogue remasters, I think I last watched this on VHS so yeah this is on extremely beautiful upscale for sure...oh and that organic grain is all
