Are either of those statements related to a product either company produces? No.

Is a statement from Sony or Panasonic regarding their yields related to a product either company produces. Yes.

Big difference....

Maybe so, but when? FOX was waiting for BD+, but now we hear that these movies announced may not have BD+, probibly because they needed to be released before FOX was ready to make their comeback.

Hey, first post! Welcome.

Can you offer a translation on those TLA?

RRT = Round robin testing
FSP = Full Standard Profile
LIVE = BD-Live
SCG = ?
PG3 = ?

Thank you ... Found the photo by Google search and had to crop and shrink it.

One anecdote about him (forget where I heard this): At the height of his popularity he met the Queen backstage after one of his performances. They were politely introduced; then Cooper said directly, "May I ask you a personal question?" There was a horrible pause; the Queen uncomfortably replied, "As personal as I'll allow ..." Cooper allowed for another very awkward pause before leaning in and asking in an arch whisper if she could get him tickets to some football cup final.

Funny how he posts this here now b/c many of the participants on THIS site have had it with AVMS and wouldn't have seen this news.

Thanks for the update.

Greetings,

This is a very interesting read. I know Dave and have spoken to him regarding this issue. Let me just say that I have never known him to be an HD DVD fanboy or someone who would disseminate information that he knew to be false just so that a high definition format *might* gain some type of an advantage in this thing we have declared a war.

Trust me this whole situation is far from being a war. Although to read some of ths posts and comments made by some here you would certainly think this was life or death.

For those of you that have gotten personal through name calling and insults you should try and put yourselves on the receiving end. I can tell you that from where I sit I always read posts like those and marvel at how easy it is to confront others in that way when it is over the internet and while using an alias. I can guarantee that if we were all sitting in a room and have this discussion it would go differently and perhaps more like civilized people who simply see things differently.

I agree with whomever it was that said that this is probably not as heavy an issue as it might seem. I promise you that it was not Dave's intention to mislead anyone but to offer information that he felt was relevant. Take the information at face value an no further. If you feel that it holds no water due to lack of proof then disregard it as such.

I can tell you honestly that while I am just as much a fan of high definiton media as most of you here I would not sacrifice my integrity in the hopes one side might have a chance to win out over the other by knowingly providing false data to you. Dave would not either.

I have no problem with anyone on this board and I frequent it often and will continue to do so. I just ask that we respect one another.

OK...off my soapbox.

Dave, I have been researching your 46GB information, I think you are onto something.

It definitely warrants further discussion with your contacts, I will try and find out something on my end.

Welcome Alex. For those unfamiliar with his posts, Alex is one of the good guys as far as looking for the truth. At least IMO. I really have no idea whether he favors one format over the other personally though.

As far as these places with 10% yields on BD50s, I don't know how many lines each is trying to run. However, if 3 places just got their yields up to 50%, like has been reported for another place outside Sony, and each got enough capacity to do just 10k discs per day, that would add capacity for close to 900k BD50s per month. I think paidgeek said there is already capacity for a couple million a month (not sure if that counts the site outside Sony) and then there is all the BD25 capacity on top of that (some of which is needed for PS3 games). I'll be surprised if those 3 sites with low yields don't get them up significantly within 6 months, or if more than a couple million BD50s per month are needed within the next 6 months.

Anybody have any data on the Indiana site for Sony? Have the numbers for Sony been from places outside the US, Indiana, or both?

I wonder how much capacity there is for HD30/9s now.

Does the same problem apply when HD-DVD approaches 13GB per layer? If so, that would give them a practical limit of 26GB to keep their yields up. Should we start some FUD of our own?

HD-DVDers can't keep it up!

Judging by HD DVD volume sizes, yes

Honestly, I'd say it holds true for any optical media, with varying "stopping points"

I think that is more likely due to them having bandwidth issues more often than space issues. At least until they start doing extras in HD more often instead of sticking us with SD extras on HD discs (which I can understand for old movies, but shouldn't be the case going forward IMO).

Rob, you know me better than to think that I'm here to spread FUD and that I have any HD DVD bias.

For those that just don't get it (this is also to those at AVS that lurk here - that also don't get it) this is NOT an issue with the Blu-ray disc format.

It IS an issue with the version that's on Blu-ray.

I'm sure everyone here is tired of the HD DVD trolls. We shouldn't lose our objectivity though.

The FACT here is that there is a section in this film on BD that is misframed when directly time-frame compared to the other original aspect ratio versions.

If Mr. Verbinski had decided to re-frame those 8 mins because he wasn't happy with the original framing, wouldn't logic dictate that he would have made sure that all versions contained this "new" framing?

So is this an issue with everyone - definitely not.

Is this an issue with the Blu-ray format - absolutely not.

This is an issue with the discrepancies that have been empirically proven.

Some of us want our BD versions to contain the exact same framing as the DVD version throughout the film. That should be respected, and until I read an official statement from Gore Verbinski, stating that the BD version is the only version that contains correct framing; then I’m going to consider it a mistake by Disney, because that’s what the current data proves.
Let me say a few things right off the bat to clear the air:

First, I agree with everything that you have said above! And without reservation.

Secondly, I think you may have misconstrued what I (and Pepar) were saying. I did not mean to indicate that you (I didn't even know that you apparently started the thread on this issue) specifically were using this misframing issue as just another HD-DVD zealot talking point to bash BD. The point was, that many other HD-DVD zealots are doing exactly that.

As you say above, this is NOT an issue with the Blu-ray disc format. It IS an issue with the versionthat's on Blu-ray.

It should be fixed, and a replacement offered in my opinion.

Anyway, welcome to the forum, and hope to see you post here more often!

I agree, given the actual disc sizes that have been posted, this aspect sounds totally plausible.

Of course, this makes discussion of yields difficult, as one person might talk about actual yields when producing 46GB discs, another person might talk about theoretical yields if 50GB discs were produced.
